eSIM, Roaming or Local SIM? What Works in China
Last checked October 19, 2026 against official sources. How we check
Quick answer
A travel eSIM or home-network roaming is the easiest option for most visitors, because many plans route data outside mainland China so foreign apps load. A local China SIM is cheaper for long stays but keeps you on the mainland network and needs registration. Buy and install before flying, and check your phone is unlocked.
Key facts
| Roaming | Home number kept; check your carrier's China daily rate |
|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Install before flying, switch on after landing |
| Local SIM | Cheaper data; registered to your identity |

Which option should I choose?
Choose by trip length and by which foreign apps you need. All three work in mainland China; they differ in routing, price and paperwork. Prices are not listed here because plans change monthly. Compare them on your provider’s page.
| Option | Data route | Foreign apps | Number for texts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home-network roaming | Via your home carrier | Reported to load | Keeps your home number | Short trips, one number |
| Travel eSIM | Depends on plan; many route abroad | Depends on routing | Usually data only | 3 to 14 days |
| Local China SIM | Mainland network | Foreign apps may not load | A Chinese number | Longer stays |
Home-network roaming usually sends data through your home carrier, so it behaves as it does at home. Many travel eSIMs do the same through servers abroad. A Yesim vendor blog says whether Google and WhatsApp work depends “almost entirely” on how the provider routes data, and names Singapore, the UK and South Korea as common routes. It says Hong Kong routing may still block some apps. That is a vendor’s own claim, so test Google and WhatsApp when you land, using the plan’s trial or refund terms.
What do travellers report about eSIM quality?
Reports vary. A traveller on r/travelchina said in July 2026 that “this year the same eSIM is significantly worse in quality. Data connection drops all the time”. Another poster on r/guangzhou warned that you cannot download half of the apps once inside China. This guide has no independent speed measurements, and vendor claims of “4G” or “5G” speed are not independent. Read the plan’s data cap, the validity window and whether the clock starts at installation or first connection.
What should I do before flying?
Follow these steps at home on your normal Wi-Fi:
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
- Buy a plan from a provider with a refund or support route. A vendor page on a Klook plan says to keep the eSIM turned off until landing in China, then turn on data roaming and pick it. Other plans differ, so follow your own instructions.
- Install the eSIM but leave it off, or follow the vendor’s rule.
- Install the apps you need. See apps you need in China.
- Set up payments, which need a text code: Alipay and WeChat Pay.
- Keep your home SIM for texts if banks or apps send codes.
- On landing, turn on the eSIM and data roaming. Open one foreign app to check routing.
What about VPNs and blocked apps?
Google services are blocked in mainland China, according to Business Insider’s October 10, 2019 list, and WhatsApp is commonly reported as affected on mainland connections. Many visitors solve this through their home carrier or an eSIM that routes outside the mainland. Whether to use a VPN is a legal matter, so check local law yourself, and this guide gives no setup instructions for one. A plan that routes abroad often removes the need.
Do I need a local SIM?
A local SIM suits residents and long stays. A poster promoting a roaming card called real-name registration “the biggest pain for tourists” (r/guangzhou, March 9, 2026; promotional). A Guangzhou resident says SIM sellers stand in front of the arrivals gate (r/guangzhou, February 26, 2026). Prices at the airport counters are not verified here, so ask for the total first. For apps that need a Chinese number, see No Chinese phone number.
Traps and how to avoid them
- Buying after you land
Travellers say some apps are hard to download inside China. Buy the eSIM and install the apps before you fly.
- Assuming every eSIM routes abroad
Routing decides whether Google or WhatsApp load. Vendor pages disagree on this, so read the plan's routing note.
- Buying a locked phone's eSIM
An eSIM needs an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone. Check settings at home.
- Counting on hotel Wi-Fi
Hotel Wi-Fi may not open foreign apps, so mobile data does the work. Check the plan's data cap against your trip length.
FAQ
Does WhatsApp work in China?
It depends on the connection. Vendor blogs say eSIMs that route data outside mainland China let WhatsApp and Google load, while a local mainland SIM does not. These are sales sources, so confirm with your provider.
Do I need a VPN?
Some visitors use one to reach foreign apps. It is a legal question, so check local law, and note that a roaming or travel eSIM plan may make it unnecessary.
Can an eSIM receive text messages?
Most data-only travel eSIMs do not include a number for texts. If an app needs a code, keep your home SIM active for texts and use the eSIM for data.
Why is my eSIM slow this year?
A traveller on r/travelchina said the same eSIM was significantly worse in July 2026, with the connection dropping. Quality varies by provider and year.
Is Hong Kong different?
Vendor pages say a mainland-only plan may not cover Hong Kong or Macau. Check the plan's coverage list if you cross the border.
