    Quick answer

Didi works in English with a foreign card, but install the right app: DiDi China, not DiDi Rider. Register with a phone number that can receive a text, add your card, and choose Express or Premier. Travellers advise avoiding the Taxi option. Pay only inside the app, not in cash.

How do I set up Didi before I arrive?

Install the app and register before you fly. The Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office says Didi has an English interface, lets you register with an overseas number, takes international cards and has 24-hour English support.

    1. Install DiDi China: Ride Hailing (滴滴出行). The store listing mentions an English interface, global mobile number login, international bank cards, translation and 24-hour in-app English support. Do not install DiDi Rider, which is for rides outside China.
    2. Register with your phone number. Newsgd says the number can be local or international, but it must be valid and able to receive a text. Newsgd says foreigners must complete real-name verification with a passport. If your roaming SIM cannot receive texts, set up a number first.
    3. Add an international bank card in the payment menu. Newsgd says foreigners can use international credit cards. We could not verify which card networks Didi accepts, so test your card before the trip.
    4. Set the language to English if the app does not follow your phone.

Amap also has an English ride-hailing screen that books rides from several providers, launched in 2025 with English pick-up points and fare estimates, according to Life of Guangzhou. It is a backup if Didi fails.

Which Didi option should I pick?

Pick Express or Premier. Didi lists several services. Its safety page says the DiDi Care protection covers Premier, Express and Luxe users, and it does not list the Taxi option.

A Reddit commenter wrote: “NEVER pick the ‘local taxi’ option on Didi — always use ride-hailing (Didi Express/Premier)” (r/guangzhou, April 19, 2026). This is a traveller’s advice. Didi has not said the Taxi option is unsafe; it only does not list it for DiDi Care.

How do I meet the driver?

Expect a phone call. One traveller wrote that drivers “will almost always call you regardless of how well you’ve put your location in the request” (r/guangzhou, March 9, 2026). Another said their biggest challenge was “communicating in Didi with the right address” (r/guangzhou, March 7, 2026).

    • Choose the pick-up point suggested by the app. Do not drop the pin on a different street.
    • Check the plate, car model and colour against the app before you get in. Didi’s guidance is to report any mismatch in the app.
    • Keep the destination in Chinese on screen. The Show your driver tool has cards for common places.
    • Use the in-app chat if the driver calls and you do not speak Chinese. The app listing says it has translation.

At Baiyun Airport, the pick-up points are in the airport guides: car park P8 at T2, and Gate 72 or car park P12 at T3. See Baiyun Airport to the city.

    Which charges should I refuse?

Refuse anything that is not on the order screen. A traveller on Reddit reports a driver asking for far more than the app price at the end of an airport trip: “Paid an additional 675¥ for a Didi from CAN to Guangzhou south railway station” (r/guangzhou, June 27, 2026). The app had estimated ¥133, and the driver asked to be paid for tolls and the drive back. This is a single report. We cannot say how common it is.

    What to do:

    • Pay inside the app only. Cash leaves you without a record to complain about. We did not find an official Didi or Guangzhou statement that banning cash is a rule, so treat this as advice.
    • Do not agree to extra fares. Ask the driver to show where a toll is on the screen. Keep a screenshot of the order.
    • If the driver asks you to cancel the trip and pay separately, decline and re-book.

    Who do I complain to?

Start in the app, then use official lines.

    1. In the app. Use the order’s help or customer-service option and attach your screenshots. The listing promises 24-hour English chat.
    2. Didi rider support: 400-0000-999, listed on Didi’s safety page as rider support and 24-hour emergency response.
    3. Guangzhou transport supervision: 020-12328. The Transport Bureau says this line, merged with 12345, takes taxi and transport complaints. See the taxi guide.
    4. Language help: call 960169. The city’s international portal says the English interpreter joins calls to 12345, 110, 120 and 119, 24 hours.

If you feel unsafe, call 110 for police. The portal says police and the emergency centre can answer in English.

    Is the metro cheaper?

Often yes, and it avoids these problems. See paying for the metro with a foreign card. For fares and complaints about street taxis, read the Guangzhou taxi guide.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Installing DiDi Rider

DiDi Rider is DiDi's international app; the China app's listing says “Ride in Chinese mainland, HK”. Install DiDi China: Ride Hailing from your app store before you fly.

    • Choosing the Taxi option

Travellers say never to pick the local taxi option. Choose Express or Premier. Didi's safety page lists its DiDi Care cover for those and Luxe, not Taxi.

    • Paying cash or agreeing a new price

If a driver asks for cash, a fake toll or an extra fee, refuse and report it in the app. Cash leaves no in-app record to complain about.

    • Expecting the driver to find you from the pin

Travellers say drivers nearly always phone you. Keep your phone on, and have the pick-up point and your destination in Chinese ready.
