How do I get to Foshan from Guangzhou?

Use the Guangfo Line, the metro line that links the two cities. Travel China Guide describes it as running from Lijiao in Guangzhou to Xincheng East in Foshan, about 38 km and 25 stations, with about 62 minutes for a single trip on the whole line. That site is a third-party guide, so check your route in the metro app or Amap.

Foshan is in mainland China, so there is no border crossing. Our data does not cover the Guangfo Line fare or the journey time from central Guangzhou, because those could not be verified. Check the fare on the machine or in the metro app.

The metro is the simplest choice for the temple because the station is the temple’s stop. We did not price the high-speed rail or check how a train compares with the metro for your starting point.

Where do I join the Guangfo Line?

Travel China Guide lists these interchanges with Guangzhou’s metro: Lijiao (Line 3), Nanzhou (Line 2), Yangang and Shachong (Line 11), Shayuan (Line 8) and Xilang (Lines 1, 10 and 22). On the Foshan side it lists interchanges at Guicheng (Foshan Metro Line 3), Kuiqi Road (Foshan Metro Line 2) and Dongping (Foshan Metro Line 3). Pick the interchange nearest your hotel in Amap, then ride to Zumiao.

The same guide gives the first and last trains at Zumiao: 06:11 to 23:40 towards Xincheng East and 06:05 to 22:46 towards Lijiao. It adds that trains run about every 4 minutes at weekday rush hours (07:30 to 09:30 and 17:00 to 19:30). These are third-party timings, so check the last train before you plan an evening return.

For paying at the gate, read the metro card guide. Its October 2025 notice covers Guangzhou Metro stations. We did not find confirmation for the Foshan section of the line.

    What is at Zumiao?

Zumiao station (祖庙站) serves the Foshan Ancestral Temple in Chancheng district. Travel China Guide’s bus-route list names Exit A (Zumiao Road) and Exit B (Jianxin Road) and lists the temple, NOVA Plaza and Lingnan Tiandi Foshan among the places near the station. We did not find an official source for which exit is closest to the temple or for the walking time. Ask in Amap.

    Foshan Ancestral Temple Museum (佛山市祖庙博物馆)

The China Daily government channel, updated February 11, 2025, gives these facts:

Address21 Ancestral Temple Road, Chancheng district, Foshan
    Hours08:30 to 18:00, last entry 17:30
    Ticket¥20 general admission

It describes a temple complex dating to the Northern Song dynasty, a Confucius Temple built in 1911, and two memorial halls opened in 2001 for Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man. It also lists displays on Taoist culture, martial arts and Foshan folk art. These facts may have changed since February 2025, so check before you go.

Lion dance performances run daily, weather permitting, at 10:00 to 10:40, 14:15 to 14:55 and 15:30 to 16:10. Cantonese Opera runs from 13:30 to 15:30 on Saturdays, Sundays, the first and 15th days of the lunar month, and holidays.

    What else is near Zumiao?

Two places come up in the sources, with different levels of detail.

    • Lingnan Tiandi Foshan (岭南天地). Travel China Guide’s station notes list it among the places around Zumiao station. We did not verify its hours, shops or ticket rules, and it is not an official attraction page.
    • Nanfeng Ancient Kiln (南风古灶). Travel China Guide’s Foshan attractions page says pottery art in Foshan began here, that its history goes back about 500 years to the Ming dynasty, that the kiln still works and that visitors can make pottery. It gives bus numbers 109, 120 and 137 from the city proper. We did not find official hours or a ticket price, so check both before you go.

    Is it worth a half-day?

If you have a day in Guangzhou’s region and want something different from the city, yes. A half-day fits the temple, a meal and a walk nearby. The plan below is editorial, built from the hours above, and no leg of it has been timed.

    Editorial half-day plan:

    1. Ride the Guangfo Line to Zumiao in the morning; the first train there is about 06:11 (third party), and the temple opens at 08:30.
    2. Reach the temple for the 10:00 lion dance, then visit the halls, including the Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man memorial halls.
    3. Eat nearby and, if you want a second stop, check hours for the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln and take one of the buses Travel China Guide lists.
    4. Leave the temple before 17:30 if you want to enter at the last-entry time, and check the last train back before you leave the kiln or any evening stop.

Can I stay in Foshan during the Canton Fair?

One Reddit commenter wrote: “Have a look at Foshan, right next door. Hotels there are much cheaper during the fair and usually still have rooms” (r/guangzhou, October 14, 2026). We did not check prices. If you do, plan the journey to the fair: the taxi guide covers fares, and the train station guide covers Guangzhou South.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Assuming foreign cards work at Foshan stations

The official notice covers Guangzhou Metro gates. We could not confirm the Guangfo Line, so carry another way to pay.

    • Arriving after last entry

The temple's last entry is 17:30 and it closes at 18:00.

    • Missing the shows

Lion dance runs at set times (China Daily, February 2025): 10:00 to 10:40, 14:15 to 14:55 and 15:30 to 16:10, weather permitting.
