    Quick answer

If your passport is not on China's visa-free lists and you do not qualify for 240-hour transit, apply for an L (tourist) visa before you fly. Fill in the form and upload documents online, wait for approval, then hand in your passport at a visa centre or embassy. Fees and processing times differ by country.

Do you need to apply at all?

Many travellers no longer do. Start with the visa-free checker. Then read the 30-day visa-free guide and the 240-hour transit guide. If your passport fits neither, or you want to stay longer or do something visa-free entry does not allow, you need a visa.

This guide covers the L visa. Business and trade-fair visitors should ask their embassy which visa type fits.

    The application in four steps

The steps below follow the 2025 application notices of the Chinese Embassy in the US and the UK visa centres. Embassies differ, so confirm each step on the page for the country where you apply.

    1. Fill in the form and upload your documents online on the system your centre or embassy points to (visaforchina.cn in the UK and Australia; consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA for the Chinese Embassy in Washington). Wait until the online review is approved, then print the confirmation page it gives you.
    2. Gather your documents. Checklists ask for a passport valid for at least six months with blank pages, a recent colour photo, and a round-trip flight booking and a hotel booking, or instead an invitation letter from a company or person in China. Applicants in the US have not needed the bookings or letter since January 1, 2024. If you apply outside your country of citizenship, you also need proof of legal stay there.
    3. Hand in your passport at the visa application centre, or the embassy or consulate that serves your area, after the online review is approved. Many offices take walk-ins in set hours; in the US an agent can hand it in, and London accepts post. Fingerprints may not be needed: the Mumbai visa centre, for example, says they are waived for stays of up to 180 days until December 31, 2026. Check your centre’s notice.
    4. Collect your passport with the visa, and check the name, dates, number of entries and period of stay printed on it before you leave.

    How early to apply

The London visa centre advises applying online at least 30 days before travel, and the US system only accepts entry dates within the next 90 days. The Chinese Embassy in Washington gives regular processing as 4 business days from passport submission, as an average; other offices differ. Apply once your dates are firm and well before your flight.

    At the border

A visa gets you to the counter. The officer still decides. Keep your hotel booking and return ticket on your phone, and fill in the arrival card online before you land.

    What we could not confirm

We read the US embassy’s requirements and the UK and Indian visa centres’ notices, some through archived copies; we did not check every country’s fee table. We have not copied fee or processing-time figures from commercial sites, because they differ by country and change. Check the centre or embassy page that serves you.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Applying when you do not need to

Check the visa-free checker and the 240-hour transit rules first. Many passports now enter without a visa.

    • Copying fees from a blog

Fees and service charges differ by nationality and country of application. Use the visa centre page for the country where you apply.

    • Booking non-refundable flights first

Most embassy checklists ask for a round-trip flight booking and a hotel booking, or an invitation letter. Book refundable options, apply, then book the rest.

    • Applying for the wrong visa type

An L visa is for tourism. If you are going to the Canton Fair or to meet suppliers, check the M visa rules for your country before you apply.

    FAQ

Can I get a tourist visa on arrival at Guangzhou?

Not for an ordinary individual tourist. China's port visas are for urgent needs, and tour groups get them only when a Chinese travel agency applies in advance. Citizens of eligible countries enter visa-free; everyone else needs a visa from outside China.

How long does the visa take?

It depends on the centre and your nationality. The Chinese Embassy in Washington lists 4 business days for regular service, counted from when you hand in your passport and given as an average. Read your centre's notice.

Do I need a hotel booking?

Most checklists ask for a hotel booking and a round-trip flight booking, or an invitation letter instead. Applicants in the US have not needed them since January 1, 2024. Confirm the current checklist for your country.

    Is the visa-free list ending?

The one-sided list has an end date. Our 30-day visa-free guide has the current date and rules.
