How do I get to Shenzhen?
Photo: Charlie fong · CC BY-SA 4.0 DetailsYou have two ways: the direct airport train, or the metro to a Guangzhou rail station. Choose by where you sleep in Shenzhen.
The direct train to Shenzhen Airport
A new intercity line runs from Baiyun Airport to Shenzhen Airport station, under 100 minutes at best. The Guangzhou government portal said on July 22, 2026 that the Baiyun section was about to open (Guangzhou Daily via gz.gov.cn). By our 12306 sample the trains were running, on sale for November 6, 2026. We found no source that gives the opening day.
On the November 6 sample the trains left Baiyun Airport North (白云机场北, T2) and Baiyun Airport East (白云机场东, T3):
| Train | T2 / T3 → Shenzhen Airport |
|---|---|
| S4811 | 08:04 / 08:11 → 09:41 |
| S4803 | 09:57 / 10:04 → 11:35 |
| S4813 | 12:09 / 12:16 → 13:52 |
| S4805 | 14:16 / 14:23 → 15:54 |
| S4815 | 16:25 / 16:32 → 18:07 |
| S4807 | 18:20 / 18:27 → 19:59 |
S4811 cost ¥75 from T3 and ¥78 from T2. We queried the fare for that train only.
- Trains are about two hours apart. If you miss one, take the short train from Baiyun Airport North to Zhuliao (竹料) and change there for the Shenzhen Airport express. The short train runs on average at least every 15 minutes (Guangzhou government portal).
- The express stops at few stations: Zhuliao, Zhenlong, Xintangnan, Dongguanxi, Humen North, Chang’an and Shenzhen Airport (Guangzhou government portal).
- Sale date. On October 23, 12306 showed these trains for November 6 as going on sale on November 3 at 14:00, not 15 days ahead.
- Shenzhen Airport is not central. Plan your onward route from Shenzhen Airport station in Amap before you go.
Metro to Guangzhou South or East, then the train
For a hotel in Futian, Nanshan or near Shenzhen North, the high-speed train is usually the better choice. The steps:
- At T2, follow the signs to Metro Line 3 at Airport North (机场北). At T3, which has no metro station, take the ¥2 Airport Line 2 branch bus (空港2线支线) to Gaozeng (高增站), where the bus stop is by Exit B, and join Line 3 there. See Baiyun Airport T2 and T3.
- For Guangzhou South (广州南站), ride Line 3 to Jiahewanggang (嘉禾望岗), change to Line 2 and ride to Guangzhou South. Jiahewanggang serves Lines 2 and 3, and Guangzhou South Lines 2, 7 and 22 (Guangzhou Metro station pages).
- For Guangzhou East (广州东站), stay on Line 3. The station serves Lines 1, 3 and 11 (same pages).
- Take the train: Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North or Futian, or Guangzhou East to Shenzhen station.
Guangzhou South has the most trains. On the sample, 180 trains ran from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North, the first at 06:18 and the last at 23:25, and 15 to Futian. From Guangzhou East, 61 intercity trains ran to Shenzhen station, from 06:10 to 22:34. Full station advice is in Guangzhou to Shenzhen by train and Guangzhou South Railway Station.
For the last metro train, see the Guangzhou Metro’s passenger service page or the 广州地铁 app. Foreign contactless cards work at the gates; see the metro payment guide.
How do I get to Hong Kong?
Photo: Baycrest · CC BY-SA 2.5 DetailsGo through Guangzhou South. 12306 returned no direct train from Baiyun Airport North or East to Hong Kong West Kowloon for November 6, 2026. We also found no official page for an airport coach to Hong Kong, so we do not list one.
- Take the metro to Guangzhou South, as in the steps above.
- Take the high-speed train to West Kowloon (香港西九龙站). On the sample, 37 trains ran from Guangzhou South, the first at 06:32 and the last at 21:28. They take 47 to 77 minutes. G6503 was ¥215; the Hong Kong guide notes a few cheaper trains.
- Guangzhou East also has trains, but they take 95 to 115 minutes. Use it only if it is much closer to you.
- At West Kowloon, go up from the platform (Level B4) to Level B2 for one-time immigration formalities for both Hong Kong and the mainland (MTR).
Hong Kong sets its own entry rules by nationality, so check the Immigration Department page before you book. In our reading, coming back is a new entry into mainland China (the NIA does not say this directly). See the visa-free checker and our Hong Kong guide for the details.
How do I buy the tickets?
Use the 12306 app or website with your passport. The steps, payment options and phone-number workarounds are in how to buy train tickets in China.
- Name and passport. Enter them exactly as in your passport. The passport you used to book is your ticket at the gate.
- Sale window. Most tickets go on sale up to 15 days ahead (Travel China). The airport trains showed a shorter window on October 23, as above.
- Arrive early. Be at the station at least 30 minutes before departure, for the security check and passport verification (Travel China).
- Land first, then decide. If you book before your flight, leave a long gap for immigration and baggage. 12306 says you can change a ticket once; read its refund rules first.
What about a taxi or Didi?
We found no official fare for a taxi from Baiyun Airport to Shenzhen or Hong Kong, so we give none. The train is the sensible option for both. For a short ride to Guangzhou East in Tianhe, our airport guide estimates about ¥94 to ¥133 from Terminal 2 on the meter, before tolls. That is our estimate from the city’s tariff, not a quote.
Traps and how to avoid them
- Going to Terminal 1
T1 closed to passengers on May 7, 2026, and the metro's Airport South station is closed with it. Use Airport North for T2, or the intercity station at T3.
- Booking Shenzhen Airport when you want the city
Shenzhen Airport station is at Shenzhen Bao'an Airport, far from Futian and Luohu. For most city hotels, Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North or Futian is the better train.
- Expecting a direct airport train to Hong Kong
12306 listed no train from Baiyun Airport to Hong Kong West Kowloon for November 6, 2026. You go via Guangzhou South.
- Searching 15 days ahead for the airport trains
On October 23, 12306 showed the airport trains for November 6 as going on sale on November 3 at 14:00. Check the sale date on the train itself.
