What is the best way from Guangzhou to Hong Kong?

The high-speed train is the best way for most visitors. Our data comes from a China Railway 12306 sample for October 25, 2026, checked against the MTR High Speed Rail fare chart and its schedule effective October 11, 2026. Fares are second class.

How do I buy the ticket?

Book on 12306 with your passport, or use one of the other channels the MTR lists. Follow the steps in how to buy train tickets in China.

    ChannelWhat the official pages say
12306 website and appAccepts international credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard, UnionPay and WeChat Pay Hong Kong. The English platform accepts account registration with an email address for foreign passport holders
MTR online ticketingDesktop and laptop computers only. You collect the ticket at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station
Designated ticket agents, station counters and machinesListed by the MTR as other ticketing channels

Some details to know before you pay:

    • Booking window. Tickets are on sale for trains departing within 15 days (MTR). Travel China says the same, and so did a Reddit commenter (“Train tickets can only be purchased 15 days in advance”, October 27, 2025).
    • Phone number. 12306 asks for a phone number that can receive texts, and accepts only mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan numbers for that step, per the MTR. Foreign passport holders can register with an email address instead on the English platform, and can add a mainland number later for verification. See no Chinese phone number if this blocks you.
    • Service hours. 12306 sells and changes tickets from 05:00 to 01:00 the next day, and from 05:00 to 24:00 on Tuesdays (MTR).
    • Real-name rule. Each passport can buy one ticket for the same train on the same date, and the passport you used to buy is your proof of travel. Staff may ask to see it on the train.
    • Unofficial sites. Travel China warns against unauthorised third-party platforms, and the 12306 FAQ says the railway does not handle ticketing problems from other websites.

What happens at West Kowloon, step by step?

The MTR says you complete one set of immigration formalities for both Hong Kong and mainland China at West Kowloon (co-location). Its arrival guide gives this order:

    1. Get off the train at the platform on Level B4.
    2. Go up to Level B2 and complete the one-time immigration formalities for both Hong Kong and mainland China.
    3. Leave through the exit gates with your train ticket, and continue on foot or by connecting transport.

The MTR gives no queue time for arrivals. The connections page says the station links to the MTR Tuen Ma Line at Austin station, and to the Tung Chung Line and Airport Express at Kowloon station, through an overhead bridge or pedestrian tunnel. Buses, minibuses, taxis and hotel shuttles also serve the station.

Hong Kong’s entry rules are separate from China’s. The Hong Kong Immigration Department says visitors need adequate funds for their stay and, unless in transit to mainland China or Macao, an onward or return ticket. Entry is never automatic, even when the requirements are met.

What should I do on the day in Guangzhou?

    1. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure for the gates, as for any train (Travel China).
    2. Go to the manual channel with your passport: most foreign passports do not work at the self-service gates (Travel China).
    3. Keep your passport handy: you leave the mainland and clear Hong Kong immigration at West Kowloon.

Luggage rules apply on the train. The MTR gives a total limit of 20 kg per adult and 130 cm for length plus width plus height of each item, and says there is no baggage consignment service. Ethanol-based hand sanitiser gels and sprays are prohibited on the trains, and the MTR suggests alcohol wipes instead.

    What about passports and visas?

You leave mainland China and enter Hong Kong, so you need your passport and any Hong Kong entry permission. Hong Kong’s rules depend on your nationality; check the Immigration Department page above.

    Getting back into China

Returning is a new entry into mainland China. Our data says you need a valid visa or a new visa-free entry, and a 240-hour transit stay ends when you leave for Hong Kong. The MTR notes that on-site visa-free transit applications are available at designated ports, including West Kowloon, and advises allowing extra time as on-site approval takes time. It also says a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region is needed, and counts Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as eligible onward destinations.

China’s visa-free transit covers 57 countries and allows 240 hours. To see where you stand, use the visa-free checker. Check that your own country is eligible for a new entry. Hold an ordinary passport and an onward ticket with a confirmed date and seat to a third country or region (not back to where you came from; Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan count as eligible onward destinations). Enter through one of the 65 designated ports, stay inside the permitted areas, and leave within 240 hours.

If your country has 30-day visa-free entry instead: The 30 days are counted from the day after you enter, for up to 30 consecutive calendar days. You can use visa-free entry repeatedly; there is currently no limit on the number of entries.

The return trip has its own timing. On the way back, the MTR says real-name checking can begin 90 minutes before departure and normally takes 30 to 45 minutes in total with security and immigration, more at weekends, holidays and for the last train. Real-name checks stop 30 minutes before departure, and the gates on Level B3 close 5 minutes before. The station’s service hours are 06:00 to 24:00.

How do I pay in Hong Kong?

Octopus is Hong Kong’s stored-value card system. Octopus’s consumer page says you can add an Octopus card to a mobile phone, and warns that fake Octopus apps exist: the official app is titled “Octopus”. We did not verify visitor card prices or deposits, so check the MTR or Octopus counters. See the metro guide for how card payment works in Guangzhou.

How do I get from Hong Kong Airport to Guangzhou?

We could verify only one option. A traveller on Reddit wrote: “the more convenient method to get from Hong Kong airport to Guangzhou (Tianhe) would be to take the SkyPier ferry to Pazhou” (r/travelchina, July 1, 2026). We did not confirm the ferry’s operator, schedule, fare or passenger rules. Travellers mention other routes, but we did not verify their fares or times. Check each operator before you plan an onward connection.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Assuming a 240-hour transit stay continues after Hong Kong

A transit stay ends when you leave the mainland for Hong Kong. Coming back needs a valid visa or a new visa-free entry.

    • Assuming Hong Kong has the same entry rules as China

Hong Kong sets its own entry rules by nationality. Check the Hong Kong Immigration Department before you book.

    • Booking Guangzhou East by mistake

Guangzhou East trains to West Kowloon take 95 to 115 minutes, not 47 to 77. Check the station on your ticket.

    • Looking for tickets too early

Tickets generally go on sale 15 days ahead, so a date a month away will show nothing yet.
