    Hospital Registration in Guangzhou for Foreigners: Steps

    Last checked October 28, 2026 against official sources. How we check

    Quick answer

    In an emergency, call 120. For other care, book on Guangzhou's official platform by website, WeChat, the Suihaoban app or 020-12320. Its notice lists passports for sign-up, but the commission's 2023 FAQ named only 14 hospitals taking passport bookings. Collect your ticket 30 minutes before your slot.

    This guide covers logistics only: how booking and registration work at a Guangzhou hospital. It gives no medical advice. In an emergency, call 120 first. For hospitals with international services, see international hospitals in Guangzhou. The medical help overview has the emergency numbers.

    Do I need an appointment?

    For non-urgent care, usually yes. GOV.UK says hospitals “may require appointments in advance for non-urgent medical assistance”, and describes booking with the hospital online, by mini programme or by phone. For an emergency, do not book: call 120.

    How do I book as a foreign visitor?

    Many Guangzhou hospitals take bookings through the city’s unified appointment platform, run by the Guangzhou Health Commission. The FAQ said in 2023 that it had connected more than 100 public and private institutions and that other hospitals were being added. The platform’s booking notice names five channels:

    1. the unified booking website (guahao.wjw.gz.gov.cn);
    2. the Guangzhou Health Link WeChat official account (广州健康通公众号);
    3. the Guangzhou Health Link WeChat mini programme (小程序);
    4. the Suihaoban app (穗好办 APP);
    5. 020-12320, by phone or official account (12320 电话/公众号).

    The notice says a booking uses your real name, ID number, phone number and current address. It lists four document types for sign-up: a mainland ID card, a passport, a Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan travel permit, and a Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan residence permit. It does not say what a visitor should enter as an address.

    The FAQ also says a foreign user signs up with a passport number, name and phone number. It does not say whether a foreign phone number works. See no Chinese phone number and the eSIM guide. For the WeChat channels, see China apps for travellers.

    • No service fee. The FAQ says the platform charges nothing for booking. You still pay the hospital’s registration fee.
    • WeChat confirmation. A booking made in WeChat is confirmed by a WeChat message, not a text message.
    • If the platform does not work for you, phone the hospital’s own line or use its own WeChat account or desk. International hospitals in Guangzhou lists contacts from hospitals’ own pages.

    What happens on the day?

    1. Collect your ticket. The booking notice says to arrive 30 minutes before your appointment, with your ID document and the booking message. The commission’s FAQ says to collect it at the hospital’s designated window or self-service terminal, that individual hospitals have their own rules, and that individual hospitals have dropped the ticket step.
    2. Register. GOV.UK describes a typical visit: you may fill in a registration form, which can include a hospital payment card, and pay the registration fee.
    3. Queue and see the doctor. You take a number and wait.
    4. Pay and collect medicine. After treatment you pay at the cashier for any medicine and collect it at the hospital pharmacy.
    5. Tests on another day. If a check cannot be finished the same day, you come back and repeat the registration step.

    GOV.UK also says hospitals commonly ask for a deposit before treatment, and that many hospitals do not accept international bank or credit cards. It says Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted in many hospitals. Ask at the desk which payment methods work.

    Take your ID document and your booking message. The Chinese phrases tool has a “Health and emergencies” group. A taxi or ride to the hospital is covered in the Didi guide, the taxi guide and the metro guide.

    Can I just walk in?

    Each hospital sets its own rules, so confirm with the hospital before you travel and book ahead where you can. Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center’s English page shows why: its visit notes say on-site registration starts at 7:00 for the General Outpatient Department and for the day’s remaining slots, but the FAQ on the same page says it runs a full appointment system and “on-site manual registration is not available”. The page names its own WeChat account (ZOCservice) and its app for booking. It also says the Ouzhuang campus has a 24-hour eye emergency service that needs on-site registration, and that the Zhujiang New Town campus has no emergency service on weekends and public holidays.

    The commission’s FAQ gives another example: a booking can fail with a message that the hospital does not take outside bookings from patients who have no file with it. In that case, go to the hospital’s registration window. The platform also lists same-day registration through the website, the WeChat official account, the mini programme and the Suihaoban app.

    Which rules catch visitors out?

    • Same-day bookings. The notice says same-day registration is not cancelled or refunded.
    • Cancelling. Cancel early, because the deadline differs by hospital. The notice says to cancel before 24:00 on the day before; the FAQ words the default as before 00:00 of the day before, which can be read as a day earlier, and says hospitals can set their own time, shown on the booking details page. In 2023 the FAQ named hospitals with cut-offs between 16:30 and 23:30 on the day before.
    • No-shows. The notice says you are a no-show if you neither collect your ticket on time nor cancel in advance. No-shows count from the day you register an account. Three put your account on a blacklist, and the block lifts after three months. Collecting your ticket three times in a row takes one no-show off the count.
    • Late arrival. An order cancelled because you came late is not refunded and counts as a no-show.
    • Hospital rules differ. Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, for example, says you can cancel online until 23:00 on the day before, and it restricts online booking for one month after repeated cancellations within 30 days.
    • Refund problems. The notice says to phone 020-12320 if a refund has not arrived after 7 working days; the FAQ gives an email address, xxb@gz.gov.cn.

    Will the doctor speak English?

    Not always. GOV.UK says English-speaking doctors and nurses may be available in large hospitals but not everywhere, that some hospitals provide English-speaking staff for a fee, and that you should seek help with a Chinese speaker where possible. The U.S. Embassy’s medical assistance page says the providers on its hospital lists supplied the information themselves and that a listing is not an endorsement.

    960169, Guangzhou’s multilingual hotline, helps on calls to government services and to 110, 120, 119 and 12345. Its page lists matters it does not cover, including matters involving the terminology of certain industries, and it does not mention hospital consultations. Ask the hospital whether it has English-speaking staff or an interpreter before you go. Our safety guide lists the emergency numbers.

    What do I get at the end?

    GOV.UK says you may be given a medical report in Chinese for the treatment and test results. It advises keeping receipts and doctors’ notes in case you need them for an insurance claim. Ask your insurer which documents it needs.

    Traps and how to avoid them

    • Avoid Trying to cancel a same-day booking online

      A same-day booking cannot be cancelled or refunded through the platform. If something goes wrong, ask at the hospital.

    • Avoid Missing an appointment without cancelling

      Three no-shows put your account on a blacklist for three months. The cancel deadline falls on the day before, and each hospital can set its own time, so cancel early. Your booking details page shows the time.

    • Avoid Assuming a passport works at every hospital

      The commission's FAQ (October 12, 2023) says passport booking was open at 14 named hospitals only. Ask the hospital before you rely on it.

    • Avoid Arriving at the slot time instead of 30 minutes early

      The platform says to collect your ticket 30 minutes before your appointment, with your ID document and the booking message.

    FAQ

    Can a foreign visitor book a Guangzhou hospital online?

    The platform's booking notice lists a passport among the documents it accepts for sign-up. The commission's FAQ (page dated October 12, 2023) says only some hospitals had opened booking to passport holders, and it named 14. Ask the hospital which channel it takes.

    Can I book at the hospital without the platform?

    GOV.UK says a hospital may require an appointment for non-urgent care and describes booking with the hospital online, by mini programme or by phone. The commission's FAQ also says some hospitals only take bookings from patients who already have a file with them.

    How long before my appointment do I collect the ticket?

    The booking notice says to arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time, with your ID document and the booking message. The commission's FAQ says each hospital has its own rules, and that some hospitals no longer use the ticket step.

    Is same-day registration possible?

    The platform's notice lists the website, the WeChat official account, the WeChat mini programme and the Suihaoban app for same-day registration. A same-day registration cannot be cancelled or refunded.

    Will 960169 interpret during a hospital visit?

    We found nothing saying it does. Its page says it helps on calls to government services and to 110, 120, 119 and 12345. The page does not mention hospital consultations, so ask the hospital whether English-speaking staff are available.
