Shopping in Guangzhou: Malls, Beijing Road, Tax Refunds
Last checked October 19, 2026 against official sources. How we check
Quick answer
For malls, go to Tianhe Road: Taikoo Hui for luxury, Grandview Mall for mid-range. For street shopping, use Beijing Road or Shangxiajiu. Overseas visitors can claim a departure tax refund at stores marked for it. Since April 2025 the minimum spend is ¥200, and claims are made at Baiyun Airport. Do not buy copy goods.
Key facts
| Malls | Tianhe Road: Taikoo Hui (upscale), Grandview Mall (mid-range), Teemall |

| Streets | Beijing Road, Shangxiajiu (pedestrian) |
| Tax refund | ¥200 minimum spend in one store on one day (April 2025 notice); claim at Baiyun Airport |

Where should you shop in Guangzhou?
Guangzhou shopping falls into three types: air-conditioned malls, old pedestrian streets and specialist markets. Wikivoyage’s district pages (dated listings, so confirm hours) give the station and opening hours below; the mall character notes come from a travel guide.
| Area | Place | Metro | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tianhe | Taikoo Hui (太古汇) | Shipaiqiao 石牌桥 | Most upscale; large food court |
| Tianhe | Grandview Mall (正佳广场) | Tianhe Sports Center 体育中心, Exit D3 | Older, mid-range, with a food court and cinema |
| Tianhe | Teemall (天河城) | Tiyu Xilu 体育西路, directly above | Young fashion |
| Tianhe | Parc Central, OneLink Walk | Tiyu Xilu, Shipaiqiao | Both listed 10:00–22:00 |
| Haizhu | Rock Square (凯德乐峰广场), R&F Haizhu Plaza (富力海珠城) | Shayuan, Jiangnanxi | Both listed 10:00–22:00 |
| Yuexiu | Beijing Road (北京路) | Beijing Road | Most stores listed 09:00–22:00 |
| Liwan | Shangxiajiu (上下九) | Changshou Road 长寿路, Exits D1, D2 | Cheaper than Beijing Road; bargaining expected |
Tianhe suits air-conditioned shopping and international brands, so it is a good wet-weather plan. Beijing Road and Shangxiajiu suit browsing and street food. Changshou Road and Daxin Road are named by one guide for jade and crafts.
What is Beijing Road like for shopping, and how is Shangxiajiu different?
Beijing Road is the central pedestrian street, with chain stores, snack stalls and a glass-covered ancient road; see the Beijing Road guide. Touts approach visitors there.

Go in the afternoon and eat in the lanes around it. For how to say no to a haggle, a polite 不用了 (bú yòng le, no thank you) is the standard way to decline. Compare prices between two shops before you buy anything, and pay a price you are comfortable with rather than the first one quoted.

Wholesale markets are a separate topic with their own rules, and this site covers them in the Canton Fair and Markets section. Three pages matter for a casual visitor:
- Guangzhou clothing markets, for the clothing trade areas.
- Wholesale markets for visitors, for the wholesale areas and visiting rules.
- Fangcun tea market, for buying tea.
Alipay data quoted by China Daily showed inbound tourists’ spending in Guangzhou rose more than 180 percent year on year from January to September 2025, led by clothing, DJI drones and smartphones. That tells you what visitors tend to buy, not what you should.
What is a sensible shopping plan?
This is a suggestion, not an official route. Do malls on a hot or wet afternoon, because they are air-conditioned and the Tianhe cluster (Taikoo Hui, Grandview, Teemall, Parc Central) sits within a few metro stops on Lines 1 and 3 according to the station names above. Do Beijing Road and Shangxiajiu in the evening, when you can eat as you browse. Keep refund purchases to participating stores and keep every receipt in one place, so the airport claim is quick. If you only have a day, pair one mall with one street rather than trying both areas.
How does the departure tax refund work?
Official-media pages say China has cut the minimum spend for departure tax refunds from ¥500 to ¥200, and that Guangzhou Baiyun Airport has a tax refund counter. The rule comes from a notice issued by the Ministry of Commerce and five other departments on April 26, 2025: purchases of ¥200 or more in one store on the same day qualify, and the cash refund limit rose from ¥10,000 to ¥20,000. Confirm at the store.
What China Daily (October 15, 2025) does say:
- Refunds apply to international guests who shop at tax refund stores and complete refund registration before departure.
- Visitors take their refund details to the airport’s tax refund counter when leaving.
- The Guangzhou Taxation Bureau runs a “tap for tax refund” service with Alipay and the Agricultural Bank of China. Visitors tap or scan their card, then show a personal tax-refund code in Alipay.
- Arriving visitors can find a map of refund stores on the Alipay homepage.
What to do:
- Shop at stores that display the tax refund sign, and ask for 退税 (tax refund) before you pay.
- Keep receipts and your passport.
- Register for the refund, then complete the claim at the airport counter before leaving, allowing extra time.
We could not read the full rules (eligibility, refund rate, goods covered), so check the tax authority’s current notice or the store. See the airport terminals guide for departures.
How do you pay and when are shops open?
Malls and large stores take Alipay and WeChat Pay; see the payment guide and the apps guide for setup. Test a small purchase first and keep a little cash. Hours follow a pattern in the listings: malls roughly 10:00–22:00, Beijing Road stores about 09:00–22:00, and street food a little later, according to one guide. Hours vary by shop, so check the app listing.
What should you avoid?
Avoid copy goods. A commenter on r/guangzhou wrote in May 2026 that Beijing Road touts offer copy watches and bags. Say no and walk on; our scams guide covers touts. Try on clothes before paying, as a Reddit user said they had not checked sizes at the time of buying. If you plan to carry a lot home, the parcel guide covers shipping.
Traps and how to avoid them
- Buying from touts
A commenter on r/guangzhou wrote that they cannot walk 5 m on Beijing Road without being bothered by someone selling copy watches and bags. Do not buy them.
- Skipping the size check
A Reddit user wrote that they did not check the sizes at the time of buying. Try clothes on in the shop before you pay.
- Assuming every shop gives a refund
Only participating stores offer the tax refund. Ask for 退税 before you pay and keep the receipts.
