    Quick answer

Guangzhou is cheap for food and transport; hotels cost most. A metro ride starts at ¥2, a metered taxi at ¥12, a food-court meal is roughly ¥15 to ¥25, and morning tea is ¥10 to ¥20 plus ¥15 to ¥45 a plate. Our sample day costs about ¥90 to ¥190 before the hotel.

    Key facts

    What does Guangzhou cost?

Food and local transport are cheap. Hotels are the big, variable cost, and we have no verified hotel rates, so we leave them out. The table gives each price with its source. Prices change, so check before you pay.

The Tianhe Road figure is a single menu from 2024, so treat it as a rough guide and expect higher prices in tourist areas. See the airport transfer guide and the Guangzhou taxi guide for how the meter works.

What does a sample day cost?

This is our own arithmetic from the table, not a quote, and it excludes the hotel.

    ItemLowHigh
    Four metro rides¥8¥16
Morning tea for one (tea charge plus two plates)¥40¥110
    Two food-court meals¥30¥50
One cheap sight (Chen Clan Academy)¥10¥10
    Total¥88¥186

So about ¥90 to ¥190 for a day of metro, morning tea, two cheap meals and one inexpensive sight. Add a taxi, a bigger sight such as Chimelong, or a restaurant dinner, and it rises quickly. For where to eat, see dim sum in Guangzhou.

    What about hotels?

We found no verified hotel rates, so we give none. Two things matter more than the average price:

    • Fair weeks. A traveller wrote on r/guangzhou in September 2026 that hotel prices “double/triple from the 3rd week of October onwards”. The 140th Canton Fair runs October 15 to November 4, 2026. This is a traveller report, not price data.
    • District. Staying in Tianhe, Yuexiu or Pazhou changes both price and travel time. See where to stay in Guangzhou and the Canton Fair hotels guide.

How can I keep costs down?

    1. Use the metro instead of taxis. Foreign contactless cards work at the gates, as the metro card guide explains.
    2. Ask the taxi driver to use the meter, and keep the receipt.
    3. Eat at food courts for lunch, and use morning tea as your main meal rather than adding a restaurant dinner.
    4. Visit from mid-November to February, when the weather is best and the autumn Canton Fair is over. See when to visit Guangzhou.
    5. Set up your payment app before you fly. The first 24 hours checklist shows the order.

Where we could not verify a price, the table says so. If you have a newer figure, tell us and we will update the date.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Using one daily figure from a blog

Daily budgets differ because writers mean different things by budget. Use the itemised prices below, with their dates, and add your own hotel.

    • Forgetting fair-week hotel prices

Travellers report hotel prices doubling or tripling from the third week of October. These are reports, not data, so check your own dates.

    • Taking a metered taxi from the airport and budgeting ¥150

The official tariff gives an estimated ¥94 to ¥133 to Tianhe before tolls. Travellers report paying ¥510 to ¥700, including one who says the meter was running.

    • Treating old metro fares as current

The city's 2026 list of major decisions plans a review of how metro fares are set, with a public hearing, by December 2026. Check the fare shown at the gate.
