    Quick answer

Stay in Tianhe if you are unsure: it is the business and shopping district, with Metro Lines 1, 3 and 5. Choose Yuexiu or Liwan for the old town and food, Haizhu near Pazhou for the Canton Fair, and the airport area only for very early flights. Book fair weeks early, because prices rise sharply.

A traveller post on r/guangzhou in June 2026 said most tourists have no idea how Guangzhou is laid out, and replies disagreed on how much the choice of district matters. The sections below sort districts by purpose. Once you have a base, the Guangzhou itinerary plans the days around it.

Tianhe: the default choice for a first visit

Tianhe is a business and shopping district. It has Zhujiang New Town, the city’s newer CBD, with the Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou Opera House and library at its southern end beside the river, according to Wikipedia’s Zhujiang New Town article.

    • Tiyu Xilu (体育西路站) is an interchange of Lines 1 and 3, close to the Teemall shopping centre and the Guangzhou Books Centre.
    • Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城站) is an interchange of Lines 3 and 5.
    • Guangzhou East railway station (广州东站) is in Tianhe and Line 1 ends there.

Tianhe suits you if you want malls, business meetings and Line 3 towards Airport North station for Terminal 2. It is less atmospheric than the old town. Travellers on r/guangzhou note that many sites recommend Tianhe for first-timers; the reason is mostly convenience.

Yuexiu and Liwan: old town, food and walking

Yuexiu is the political and cultural centre of Guangdong and the seat of the city government (Wikipedia). The Guangzhou government and the province’s offices are here.

    • Gongyuanqian (公园前站) connects Lines 1 and 2 under People’s Park.
    • Haizhu Square (海珠广场站) connects Lines 2 and 6.
    • Beijing Road pedestrian street (北京路步行街) is served by Line 6, according to Wikipedia. See the section on touts in common scams in Guangzhou.

Liwan holds Xiguan, the historic western quarter. It includes Shamian island (沙面), a gazetted historical area with colonial-era buildings, hotels and a youth hostel. Chen Clan Academy (陈家祠站) is an interchange of Lines 1 and 8, named after the nearby clan academy.

Stay here for morning tea, street food and walking. The trade-off is fewer large business hotels and more older buildings. For where to eat, see dim sum in Guangzhou.

Haizhu and Pazhou: Canton Fair and the river

The Canton Fair complex is in Pazhou, Haizhu District. Xingangdong (新港东站) on Line 8 is close to the Guangzhou International Convention Exhibition Center, according to Wikipedia. Pazhou (琶洲站) is on Lines 8 and 11.

The 140th Canton Fair runs October 15 to November 4, 2026, in three phases. The spring 2027 session is expected in mid-April, with dates still to be confirmed. See Canton Fair spring 2027 dates.

    • Stay in Pazhou or Xingangdong to walk to the halls.
    • Stay along Line 8 (Kecun, Changgang) to be near interchanges with Lines 3 and 2, and ride in.
    • Staying across the river in Zhujiang New Town is possible but needs a map check for the route.

Canton Tower station (广州塔站) on Line 3 is on the south bank in Haizhu, with the Zhujiang New Town skyline across the river. It suits views and evenings. The Canton Fair hotels guide compares areas and shuttles in detail.

Near the airport or the south station

Baiyun Airport is far from the centre. Line 3 runs to Airport North station for Terminal 2. Terminal 3 has no metro station of its own: take Line 3 or 9 to Gaozeng, then the ¥2 airport bus. Terminal 1 has been closed to passengers since May 7, 2026. See the airport transfer guide for routes. Newsgd reported in April 2026 that the airport’s affiliated hotels offered free shuttle buses during the Canton Fair, so ask the hotel what it runs for your dates.

Guangzhou South railway station (广州南站) is in Panyu, about 17 km south of central Guangzhou, and Line 2 starts there, according to Wikipedia. A hotel nearby helps with a very early train, but it is a long ride from sights. See the Guangzhou South station guide.

How do I choose a hotel inside the district?

    1. Count metro changes. Aim for one line, or one change, between the hotel and the places you will visit most.
    2. Confirm foreign guests are accepted. Ministries told hotels in 2024 not to refuse guests only because they lack a foreigner licence. That does not guarantee a room, so ask before you pay.
    3. Save the address in Chinese. Use the hotel’s 中文 name and address on the booking page. The Show your driver tool has cards for the main airport terminals and sights.
    4. Book fair weeks early. In fair weeks travellers report prices doubling or tripling. These are traveller reports, not price data.
    5. Expect registration. The hotel registers you with the police with your passport. See the accommodation registration guide.

If you will arrive late, read the first 24 hours checklist to plan the ride to the hotel.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Choosing by distance on a map

Guangzhou is spread along the Pearl River and the metro is the real measure. Check the metro line and the number of changes to the places you want, not the distance in kilometres.

    • Booking a Canton Fair hotel the week before

A traveller wrote on October 14, 2026 that all close hotels were fully booked or ridiculously priced. Book when you know your phase and pick free cancellation.

    • Trusting review scores alone

Travellers on r/guangzhou say some hotel reviews on booking apps are fake or paid for. Read recent photos and complaints, and compare two sources.

    • Assuming every hotel can host you

Ministries told hotels in 2024 not to refuse foreigners only for lacking a foreigner licence, but travellers still report refusals. Confirm on the booking page or by message before you pay.

    • Staying at the airport for a city trip

Baiyun Airport is far from central Guangzhou. An airport hotel suits an early flight or a late arrival, not a stay for sightseeing.

    FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Guangzhou for first-timers?

Tianhe, because it has the most metro interchanges, shopping, the Zhujiang New Town skyline and Guangzhou East railway station. Travellers on r/guangzhou say many guides recommend it for first visits.

Is it better to stay near Canton Tower?

Canton Tower station on Line 3 sits on the south bank of the Pearl River in Haizhu, with the Zhujiang New Town skyline across the water. It suits views and evenings, but the old town is a metro ride away.

Where should I stay for the Canton Fair?

Stay in Haizhu near Xingangdong or Pazhou on Line 8 if you want to walk, or along Line 8 and ride in. Our Canton Fair hotels guide compares them.

Where should I stay for a very early or late flight?

An airport-area hotel near Baiyun Airport saves a long ride at awkward hours. The airport said in April 2026 that its affiliated hotels offered free shuttle buses during the Canton Fair.

Do I need to register with the police when I stay in a hotel?

No. The hotel registers you with the police at check-in, using your passport. Rentals and private homes have different steps.
