    Quick answer

Plan two or three days in Guangzhou. One day covers the old town, the river and a night view. Three days adds museums, a park or a day trip. A week works only if you add Foshan, Shenzhen or Hong Kong. Pick one hotel area, avoid Mondays for museums, and use the metro.

How many days do you need in Guangzhou?

Two or three days is the best fit for a first visit. Guangzhou has no single must-see landmark. The reward is a set of neighbourhoods, museums, parks, food and the river, spread over a large city, so each extra day adds a district rather than a bigger sight. If you are still deciding whether to come at all, read is Guangzhou worth visiting.

    Where should you base yourself?

Pick one hotel area and stay in it for the whole trip. Tianhe is the default for a first visit, with the most metro lines and the Zhujiang New Town skyline. Yuexiu and Liwan put you in the old town for morning tea and walking. The where to stay guide compares the areas, including Haizhu and Pazhou for the Canton Fair.

How do you move between the sights?

The metro is the connector. Travellers can tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express or JCB card issued outside China at the gates, according to the city’s October 2025 notice. The metro guide has the steps, and a 2023 city notice lists one-day and three-day passes sold in the Guangzhou Metro app (广州地铁).

    Five lines cover most plans:

    • Line 1 runs through the old city. Its stations include Huangsha (for Shamian Island), Chen Clan Academy (for the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall) and Gongyuanqian (for Beijing Road).
    • Line 3 serves Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town. It also runs to Airport North for Terminal 2.
    • Line 8 shares the Chen Clan Academy stop with Line 1.
    • Line 11 is the loop line. For Baiyun Mountain, the South Gate stop is Yuntai Garden (云台花园).
    • Line 2 shares Gongyuanqian with Line 1.

Our plans give no ride times between stops, because we have no official ones. Allow extra time for changes. The official line query and the 广州地铁 app have current line information and last-train times.

    What should you plan around?

    • Closing days. The Nanyue King Museum is closed Mondays. The Guangdong Museum is closed Mondays (reported). Both need a booking: see the museums guide. Check the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall’s closing day before you go, because sources disagree.
    • Weather. June to September is hot and wet. November to February is the comfortable season. See when to visit Guangzhou.
    • Canton Fair weeks. Hotels fill and prices rise. Read Canton Fair hotels before you book, and the first-timer guide if you are attending.
    • Public holidays. Sights, hotels and trains are busier during China’s Golden Weeks (in 2026, May 1 to 5 and October 1 to 7, per our when to visit guide); the State Council publishes the next year’s dates in November. Check train availability before you fix your dates.
    • Rain. Swap parks and the river for museums, the Cantonese Opera Art Museum or a mall. The museums guide and the Cantonese opera guide cover the options.

Which day trips add a day?

A day trip uses a whole day. The table lists the trains from the Guangzhou data we hold, for travel on October 25, 2026. Prices vary by train, so check 12306 for your date.

Hong Kong and Macao are border crossings: carry your passport, and note that coming back into mainland China is a new entry that needs a valid visa or a new visa-free entry. For Macao, the train ends at Zhuhai and you cross the border on foot, so the fare shown is to Zhuhai. Each route guide has the details.

    What will it cost?

Entry fees in Guangzhou are low, and many of the old-town sights are free or cost ¥10. Food and hotels are the larger costs. The budget guide has a dated price table and a sample day, and each plan adds its own cost table. Prices change, so check each sight’s guide on the day you go.

Which sight guides go with the plans?

Each plan links to the guide for every stop, so hours and tickets stay in one place: Shamian Island, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Beijing Road, Yuexiu Park, Canton Tower, Baiyun Mountain and Chimelong Safari Park. For morning tea, see dim sum in Guangzhou. For the full catalogue of sights, see things to do in Guangzhou.

These are suggested plans built from published sources, not routes that someone walked and timed. Clock times in the plans are suggestions.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Packing the old town and the new city into one morning

The old town in Liwan and Yuexiu is on the west side and Zhujiang New Town is across the city. Group each day by area and use the metro between areas.

    • Planning a museum day on a Monday

The Nanyue King Museum is closed Mondays, and the Guangdong Museum is closed Mondays (reported). Put parks, streets and the river on Monday.

    • Counting a Hong Kong or Macao day as a Guangzhou day

Both cross a border and need your passport. The train to Hong Kong takes 47–77 min, and the train to Zhuhai, the stop before the Macao border, takes 52–101 min. Border checks and the way back add time, so plan a full day for either.

    FAQ

How many days do I need in Guangzhou?

Two or three days suit most first visits. One day is enough for the old town and the night view. A fourth to seventh day only makes sense with day trips to Foshan, Shenzhen, Hong Kong or Macao.

Is one day in Guangzhou enough?

It is enough for a first look: morning tea, Shamian Island, one old-town sight and the river at night. It will not cover museums or a day trip. If you are in transit, read the layover guide first.

How many days for Guangzhou and Shenzhen?

Three days in Guangzhou plus one day in Shenzhen is one workable split. The train takes 29–52 min, so Shenzhen also works as a half-day add-on if you start early.

How many days for Guangzhou and Hong Kong?

Plan at least a full day for Hong Kong. The train takes 47–77 min, but you pass border control at West Kowloon in each direction, and re-entering mainland China is a new entry. Check that your passport still qualifies for a visa-free entry on your return date.

Is Guangzhou good for a weekend?

Yes. A weekend is two days, and the plan is the old town on one day and the river and a museum on the other. Avoid Monday if your plan includes museums.
