    Quick answer

Guangzhou's main museums are free or cheap but need booking. The Guangdong Museum is free with a timed, real-name slot. The Nanyue King Museum's palace zone is free by reservation and its tomb zone costs ¥10. Both open about 09:00 and close at 17:00 or 17:30. Reserve through each museum's WeChat service first.

Which Guangzhou museums are worth a visit?

Four are easy to reach and cheap. The Guangdong Museum covers the province’s history, the Nanyue King Museum shows a 2nd-century BC royal tomb and palace, the Guangzhou Museum sits in the Ming-era Zhenhai Tower, and Chen Clan Hall houses the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum.

How does the Nanyue King Museum work?

The official site says it is open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:30 with the last ticket and entry at 17:00, closed Mondays, and open on national holidays.

The palace zone (王宫展区, 中山四路316号) is free. Reserve in WeChat: 南越王博物院 → 王宫展区 → 门票讲解预约. Enter by the east gate and leave by the west gate at Beijing Road 374. By metro, take Line 1 or 2 to Gongyuanqian, Exit F.

The tomb zone (王墓展区, 解放北路867号) costs ¥10 (half price ¥5 for students up to bachelor level and ages 60–64). Free entry applies to under-18s and over-65s, who still need a free ticket or reservation. The lower tomb chamber needs a separate free reservation made a day ahead. Take Line 2 to Yuexiu Park, Exit E. Free guided tours run at 09:30 at both zones, limited to 20 people.

How does the Guangdong Museum work?

Its site says it is open to the public free of charge, with an all-visitor, timed, real-name reservation system. The June 2026 page showed entry from 09:00, last entry at 16:00 and closing at 17:00. Address: 广州市天河区珠江新城珠江东路2号; tel 020-38046886. A local guide says it is closed on Mondays and runs longer hours in summer, and names Opera House Station Exit B on the APM line. We could not confirm how overseas visitors register, so check the booking mini-program or call before travelling.

What about the Guangzhou Museum and Chen Clan Hall?

The Guangzhou Museum is inside Zhenhai Tower in Yuexiu Park. The 2020 city list gives 09:00–17:30 and a Monday closure. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall guide covers the folk arts museum, where official pages disagree on opening time. These lists are old, so confirm hours.

What is the history behind each museum?

Nanyue King Museum. Wikipedia says the tomb belongs to Zhao Mo, who ruled Nanyue from 137 BC to 122 BC. It was found in downtown Guangzhou in 1983 and the museum opened in 1988. The highlights it lists include a jade burial suit of 2,291 jade pieces, a gold-inlaid bronze tiger, a seal associated with “Emperor Wen” and a Persian silver box described as the earliest imported product found in China to date. The article also says 15 courtiers were buried alive with the king.

Guangdong Museum. The new building opened in May 2010 in Zhujiang New Town, and the old museum in Yuexiu closed soon after, per Wikipedia. The design is inspired by the Cantonese ivory puzzle ball, with a spiral staircase around a four-storey atrium. Permanent displays cover historical artefacts, natural history and local vernacular art, and special exhibitions rotate.

Guangzhou Museum. It has been in Zhenhai Tower, in Yuexiu Park, since 1928. The tower dates from 1380 and has been rebuilt five times.

Chen Clan Hall. Built 1888–1894 with donations from 72 counties, and a museum since 1959, according to the city’s English portal. See the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall guide.

    Which museum should you pick?

This is an opinion. If you have one slot, take the Nanyue King Museum for something you cannot see elsewhere, because it is a 2,100-year-old royal tomb and palace site. Take the Guangdong Museum for a broad, free, air-conditioned morning in Zhujiang New Town, which suits a river evening afterwards. Take Chen Clan Hall for craftsmanship. Take the Guangzhou Museum if you are already in Yuexiu Park.

What is nearby for food and combinations?

    • Nanyue palace zone and tomb zone: the palace zone exits at Beijing Road 374, so lunch on Beijing Road fits. The tomb zone is beside Yuexiu Park.
    • Guangdong Museum: Zhujiang New Town has mall food courts and Canton Tower is a few stops away. See things to do in Guangzhou for a river combination, and Guangzhou at night for the evening.
    • Chen Clan Hall: pair with Shamian Island and Liwan morning tea; see the dim sum guide.
    • Two museums in one trip: 3 days in Guangzhou puts the Nanyue King Museum on day 2 and the Guangdong Museum in one choice for day 3.

Wikivoyage’s Tianhe entry (dated) adds that the Guangdong Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:00 and caps free admission at 5,000 a day, and its Liwan entry says foreigners must show a passport to buy Chen Clan tickets. Both are older than the official pages, so confirm.

What are the tips for rainy days and families?

Book a morning slot at the Guangdong Museum or the Nanyue palace zone, and carry your passport. Museums are the best wet-weather plan in the city, and a morning slot leaves the afternoon for lunch and a second indoor stop. With children, the Guangdong Museum’s atrium and natural history space are a reasonable fit, but we found no official family information. For other rainy-day ideas, see things to do in Guangzhou.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Turning up without a booking

The Nanyue museum runs a full reservation system and the Guangdong Museum uses timed slots. Book on WeChat first.

    • Planning a Monday visit

Nanyue is closed Mondays, and city lists give Monday closure for several others. Check each notice.

    • Missing the lower tomb chamber

The ¥10 tomb-zone ticket does not include the lower chamber. It needs a separate free reservation made a day ahead.
