    Quick answer

Three days covers Guangzhou's old west, its historic centre and the river, plus one choice for day 3: Baiyun Mountain with the Guangdong Museum, Foshan, Chimelong or Shenzhen. Base yourself near Metro Line 1. Several museums close on Mondays, so check the weekday first. This is a suggested plan built from published sources.

Is 3 days in Guangzhou enough?

Yes, if you want the city itself. Three days covers the old west in Liwan, the historic centre around Beijing Road and Yuexiu Park, and the river at night. Day 3 is your choice, because the city has no single big sight that fills a third day. This page is a suggested plan built from published sources, not a route that someone walked and timed. The clock times are suggestions. They are not ride times, and the plan gives no last-train times: check them in the official line query or the 广州地铁 app.

If you have less time, the Guangzhou itinerary hub compares one- to seven-day plans. If you are still deciding whether to come, read is Guangzhou worth visiting.

Where should you stay for all three nights?

Pick one base and keep it. Days 1 and 2 are built around Metro Line 1, which the stop lists below show serves Shamian’s station, Chen Clan’s station and Gongyuanqian. A hotel near that line saves you a change on most legs. Tianhe is the usual first-visit district, while Yuexiu and Liwan put you in the old town. The where to stay guide compares them. During Canton Fair weeks, travellers report that prices rise sharply and rooms near the venue sell out, so read Canton Fair hotels before you book.

You can pay at the metro gates by tapping a contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express or JCB card issued outside mainland China, according to the city’s October 2025 notice. Steps are in the metro guide. For museum bookings and ticket apps, set up payment first with the Alipay and WeChat Pay guide.

Day 1: Liwan, Shamian and Chen Clan

The old west is the oldest part of the city that visitors reach easily. Keep the day inside Liwan so the metro stays on Line 1 and Line 6.

About 08:30, morning tea. Start with dim sum before the queues. The dim sum guide explains how to order, what the tea charge is and which long-established teahouses to look for. Prices are in that guide and in the budget guide; they are third-party figures, so treat them as reported.

About 10:00, Shamian Island. A river island of 19th-century European-style buildings, free to walk.

    • Metro: Huangsha 黄沙站 (Lines 1 and 6) (reported)
    • Entry: free (reported). Free to walk around the island. Some buildings, museums and exhibitions inside have their own hours and tickets. (reported)
    • Hours: Open 24 hours (reported)

Walk the main street and the river path and leave by the same footbridge. Most buildings are not open to visitors, so you go for the streets. See the Shamian Island guide.

About 13:30, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. A Qing-era clan hall known for its ceramic roof-ridge figures and carved panels, run today as the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum.

    • Metro: Chen Clan Academy 陈家祠站 (Lines 1 and 8) (reported). Line 1 links this station with Shamian’s, so you do not need to change.
    • Entry: ¥10
    • Hours: 09:00–17:30 (reported)

The closing day differs between sources, so read the notice for your date before you set out. The Chen Clan guide sets out the disagreement. Plan for about an hour and leave well before closing.

About 15:30, Yongqingfang. This is the restored heritage lane beside the Cantonese Opera Art Museum. The things to do guide covers it with a dated source, and no price or hours are repeated here.

About 17:00, Cantonese Opera Art Museum. The museum sits on Enning Road and stays open into the evening.

    • Metro: Huangsha 黄沙站 (Lines 1 and 6) (reported). This is the Line 1 station again.
    • Hours: 09:00–21:00, last entry 20:30. Closed Mondays.
    • Entry: free. Free admission, per the Guangzhou government's 2020 museum directory; holiday exceptions are possible, so check before you go.

China Daily (May 2025) says the museum stages three shows a day. Travel guides say a reservation is needed through a WeChat channel, but no official page confirms it, so the Cantonese opera guide suggests calling first. It also found no source on English subtitles. A nearby dinner closes the day. The street food guide lists wonton noodles at ¥15 to ¥28 from a commercial guide.

    Rainy day swap, day 1

Shamian and the lane walk suffer in rain. Spend the time at the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, give Chen Clan more time, and stretch morning tea. For other indoor options, see the museums guide.

Day 2: Beijing Road, Yuexiu Park and the river

Day 2 runs from the historic centre to the river. Book the morning museum before you go.

About 09:00, Nanyue King Museum, palace zone. It shows the site of a royal palace of the Nanyue kingdom, from about 2,100 years ago.

    • Metro: Gongyuanqian 公园前站 (Lines 1 and 2), Exit F
    • Hours: Tue–Sun 09:00–17:30, last entry 17:00. Closed Mondays.
    • Entry: free. Palace zone free with a reservation on the WeChat account 南越王博物院. The tomb zone (广州市越秀区解放北路867号, Yuexiu Park Station Exit E) costs ¥10 (¥5 half price), and its lower chamber needs a separate free reservation a day ahead.

Reserve in WeChat under 南越王博物院. The museums guide gives the steps and the tomb zone, which is a separate ticket.

About 11:30, Beijing Road for lunch. The museum’s exit leads towards the pedestrian street. Beijing Road is free to walk and sits over a preserved ancient road surface.

    • Metro: Gongyuanqian 公园前站 (Lines 1 and 2). It is the same station as the palace zone.
    • Entry: free (reported)

Expect touts selling copy goods. The Beijing Road guide names Huifu East Road for cheung fun and sweet soups. Do not tie a museum slot or a boat to a tight lunch.

About 14:00, Yuexiu Park and Zhenhai Tower. A hillside park with the Five Rams statue and a Ming-era tower that houses the Guangzhou Museum.

    • Entry: free (reported). Free entry with no booking; events inside such as the Spring Festival lantern fair charge separately. (reported)
    • Hours: 06:00–22:00 (reported)

Line 2 serves the park, per the Yuexiu Park guide, which also covers the gates and the Guangzhou Museum. The museum’s Monday closure comes from a 2020 city list and is reported only.

About 16:30, Canton Tower. From Yuexiu Park, take Line 2 back to the Line 1 and Line 2 station used earlier, ride Line 1 towards Tianhe and change to Line 3. The stay guide lists Tiyu Xilu as the Line 1 and Line 3 interchange (a Wikipedia-sourced detail), so confirm the change in the 广州地铁 app.

    • Metro: Canton Tower 广州塔站 (Line 3 and APM line)
    • Hours: 09:30–22:30

The official pages publish no ticket price. The Canton Tower guide lists reseller prices as of October 19, 2026 and explains the decks. Arrive in daylight and stay for the lights. On a hazy day, the guide says the view is poor and the cruise gives a better look at the tower.

About 19:00, Pearl River night cruise. Boats leave from the tower’s Fortune Pier.

    • Metro: Canton Tower 广州塔站 (Line 3 and APM line)
    • Price: ¥88–398 (reported). Reported ¥88–398 depending on boat, deck and buffet (unofficial guides, 2025–2026). The official channels are the 广州塔珠江游 WeChat mini program and the operator's first-floor desk at Canton Tower. (reported)

No official timetable is available, so check the day’s sailings at the Canton Tower operator’s first-floor desk or in the 广州塔珠江游 mini-program. The night cruise guide covers piers and booking. Bring your passport, as one 2026 guide advises.

    Rainy day swap, day 2

Replace Yuexiu Park with the Guangzhou Museum inside Zhenhai Tower and the Nanyue tomb zone. Both are indoors and priced in the museums guide. Skip the tower’s open platforms on a wet or hazy evening. In heavy rain, spend the afternoon in a Tianhe mall instead. The shopping guide lists them.

    Day 3: choose one

Day 3 is the easiest day to adapt. Pick by what you want and by the weather forecast.

OptionBest forWhat it usesEntry and fares
    A. Baiyun Mountain and the Guangdong MuseumWalking, a view, a free museumA morning on the hill, an afternoon in Zhujiang New Town¥5 to enter; museum free with a booking

    C. Chimelong Safari ParkChildren, animalsThe whole day¥210–350
    D. Shenzhen or Hong KongA second cityThe whole dayTrain fares below

Option A: Baiyun Mountain and the Guangdong Museum

Start early. Baiyun Mountain is the green hill north of the centre, and the Baiyun Mountain guide explains the gates, the cable car and the shuttle buses.

    • Metro: Yuntai Garden 云台花园站 (Line 11), for the South Gate. The official page gives no exit letter, so follow the Baiyun Mountain signs. Plan the change from your hotel in the metro app.
    • Hours: South and West gates 24 hours; other gates between 06:00–22:00 and 08:00–17:00 (reported)
    • Fees: ¥5 single entry (official, checked October 21, 2026). The cable car (¥25 up, ¥20 down), shuttle buses (¥10 or ¥20 a ride), Moxing Ridge (¥5), Yuntai Garden (¥10) and the Yunxi and Yunluo botanical gardens (¥20 each) are separate.

Allow half a day for the summit area. Keep a cushion before your afternoon slot.

The Guangdong Museum sits in Zhujiang New Town, across the city from the hill.

    • Metro: Opera House (APM line) (reported)
    • Hours: Entry from 09:00, last entry 16:00, closes 17:00. Closed Mondays (reported).
    • Entry: free. Free, with a timed, real-name reservation for every visitor (official). A local guide says special exhibitions need a ticket.

The museum’s last entry is early, so choose your slot first and plan the hill around it. Our museums source could not confirm how overseas visitors register, so check the booking channel or call before travelling. If rain moved you to museums on day 2, you can still do the Guangdong Museum here; it is a different museum.

    Option B: Foshan

Foshan is a separate city on the Guangfo Line, and the Guangzhou to Foshan guide covers the station, the temple and the metro. The journey time and fare are not verified on the official side, so this page gives none. Check the guide and the line’s own information on the day.

    Option C: Chimelong Safari Park

Chimelong needs the whole day, and the Chimelong guide has the ticket types.

    • Metro: Hanxi Changlong 汉溪长隆站 (Lines 3 and 7), Exit E
    • Hours: October 2026: 09:30–18:00 (October 7–31); check the official site for other months
    • Tickets: Official page (October 19, 2026): weekdays (平日) standard ¥300, youth ¥240, child/senior/concession ¥210; peak days (特定日) ¥350 / ¥280 / ¥245. One-day ticket; check the price for your date when you buy.

Add nothing else to this day.

Option D: Shenzhen or Hong Kong

Both are train days. The figures below come from the 12306 sample for travel on October 25, 2026, and prices vary by train.

    TripStation to stationTimeFareGuide

Hong Kong crosses a border, so carry your passport. Hong Kong’s own entry rules depend on your passport, and coming back is a new entry into mainland China. Allow a whole day. Shenzhen is inside mainland China, with no border check.

Entries: depend on the option, from the cheap hill and free museum to a full day-trip fare. Food and transport are extra (checked October 22, 2026).

    Rainy day swap, day 3

Baiyun Mountain is the weakest wet-weather option, and the scenic area asks visitors to follow forecasts. In rain, do the Guangdong Museum alone and add the Cantonese Opera Art Museum if you skipped it on day 1. A train day to Shenzhen or Hong Kong also works in rain.

What if one of your days is a Monday?

Several museums close on Mondays. Find which day of your trip falls on a Monday and use the matching swap.

    If this is MondaySkipDo instead
Day 1The Cantonese Opera Art Museum (closed Mondays)Spend the extra time in Yongqingfang and a Xiguan meal. Check Chen Clan’s closing day as well
Day 2The Nanyue King Museum (closed Mondays) and the Guangzhou MuseumStart at Beijing Road, then Yuexiu Park, then Canton Tower and the cruise
Day 3The Guangdong Museum (closed Mondays (reported))Do Baiyun Mountain without the museum, or pick option B, C or D

You can also swap days 2 and 3 so that the Monday falls on the hill, Chimelong, Foshan (check the temple’s closing day first) or a train day. Check the closing days against the sources again before you leave, because they come from different dates.

What if you have 2 days or 4 days?

Two days. Drop day 3. Keep day 1 and day 2, and drop the opera museum and Yongqingfang if you want a shorter old-west day. The hub lists the other plan lengths as they go live.

Four days and three nights. Expect two full days plus part days for arrival and departure, so use days 1 and 2 and fit one day 3 option if your flight is late. With a fourth full day, use a second option from day 3. Foshan and Baiyun Mountain pair easily as separate days.

Unverified items and how to read this page

    • Interchange names come from the live stay guide and a third-party source, not from the official line map, which could not be reached while this page was written.
    • Chen Clan’s opening hours and closing day differ between city sources.
    • The opera museum’s free entry comes from the city’s 2020 museum directory. A February 2026 government walking guide gives its hours but no price.
    • The Guangzhou Museum’s Monday closure comes from a 2020 city list.
    • Food prices are third-party figures.

For more sights and the full catalogue, use things to do in Guangzhou and the food guide.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Doing day 2 on a Monday

The Nanyue King Museum is closed Mondays, and the Guangzhou Museum is reported closed the same day. Move the museum stops to another day or follow the Monday table below.

    • Turning up without a booking

The Nanyue palace zone needs a WeChat reservation and the Guangdong Museum a timed, real-name slot. Reserve before you go.

    • Trusting one opening time for Chen Clan

City sources disagree on its hours and on its closing day. Read the notice for your date and put it early in the afternoon, not at closing time.

    • Stacking Baiyun Mountain on top of a day trip

Foshan, Chimelong, Shenzhen and Hong Kong each use most of a day. Pick one for day 3.

    FAQ

Is 3 days in Guangzhou enough?

Yes for the city's core: the old west, the historic centre, the river and one extra. It is not enough to add Foshan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong as well. Each of those is its own day.

What should I do on day 3 in Guangzhou?

Pick Baiyun Mountain and the Guangdong Museum if you want a walk and a museum, Foshan for a temple town, Chimelong Safari Park if you travel with children, or a train to Shenzhen or Hong Kong.

How do I fit 4 days and 3 nights?

Four days and three nights usually means an arrival afternoon, two full days and a departure morning. Keep days 1 and 2 as written. If you have a fourth full day, add a second day 3 option.

Where should I stay for a 3-day trip?

Choose one base near Metro Line 1 and keep it for all three nights. The stay guide compares Tianhe, Yuexiu and Liwan.

    What if it rains?

Each day below has a swap built from museums, the Cantonese Opera Art Museum and malls. Baiyun Mountain is the weakest wet-weather choice.
