    Quick answer

Guangzhou's best things to do are neighbourhood walks, museums, temples, river views and food, not one big landmark. Start with Canton Tower and a river cruise, then Shamian, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and Beijing Road. Many sights are free or cost ¥10. Add Chimelong Safari Park if you have a day for it.

What kind of city is Guangzhou for sightseeing?

Guangzhou is a city of neighbourhoods, not one headline landmark. A Reddit commenter who runs a Guangzhou guide site wrote in May 2026 that it is “more neighborhoods, old streets, parks, small museums, food areas, river walks, and random historical places”. So the useful question is not “what are the top ten sights” but “which area am I in today”. The sections below group sights by area, then give a comparison table, ready-made half-day and full-day routes, and wet-weather and evening options. For a first day, see your first 24 hours in Guangzhou and where to stay.

Opening hours and prices below come from official pages where we cite them. Where a figure comes from Wikivoyage or a travel guide, it is marked as dated, and you should confirm it on the day.

Which sights are in the old city (Yuexiu and Liwan)?

The old city is dense with sights, and many are free or ¥10 (Shamian, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Beijing Road, the Nanyue palace zone). It is also where much of the food is.

    • Shamian Island (沙面). Free, car-free streets of colonial-era buildings. Metro Line 1 or 6 to Huangsha (黄沙站).
    • Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠). A clan hall with roof-ridge ceramics and carved panels. ¥10 on the city portal. Lines 1 and 8, Chen Clan Academy station (陈家祠站).
    • Yongqingfang (永庆坊). A restored lane district at 99 Enning Road (恩宁路99号). Wikivoyage lists it as free, 09:00–22:00 (dated). A Cantonese Opera Art Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆, free per Wikivoyage) is at 127 Enning Road.
    • Shangxiajiu (上下九). An older pedestrian street of arcaded buildings. Wikivoyage says prices are generally lower than on Beijing Road and bargaining is expected. Line 1, Changshou Road (长寿路站).
    • Beijing Road (北京路步行街). The central pedestrian street, with a glass-covered ancient road. Line 6 Beijing Road, or Lines 1 and 2 Gongyuanqian.
    • Guangzhou museums. The Nanyue King Museum’s palace zone is beside Beijing Road, and its tomb zone is next to Yuexiu Park.
    • Yuexiu Park (越秀公园). Free hill park with the Five Rams statue and Zhenhai Tower.
    • Temples and the mosque. Huaisheng Mosque (怀圣寺, 56 Guangta Road) is near Ximenkou Station, Line 1. Wikivoyage lists Liurong Temple (六榕寺, free, Gongyuanqian) and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (中山纪念堂, Line 2, ¥10 to go inside, dated listing).

North of the old city, Baiyun Mountain (白云山) is the green hill for a longer walk: ¥5 entry, and Metro Line 11 to Yuntai Garden for the South Gate.

Which sights are in Zhujiang New Town and Haizhu?

This is the modern riverside, and it is the best area after dark. Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城) in Tianhe has the Guangdong Museum, the Opera House and the library. Across the river in Haizhu, Canton Tower (广州塔, 广州市海珠区阅江西路222号) stands at Haixinsha’s eastern end.

    • Canton Tower. Official hours 09:30–22:30. The official pages do not publish prices; resellers list about ¥150 for the 433 m level and about ¥228 for the 450 m platform. Metro Line 3 or the APM to Canton Tower station (广州塔站).
    • Pearl River night cruise. Reported prices run from ¥88 to ¥350 depending on boat and deck. The tower’s own pier is at its north-east side.
    • Guangdong Museum (广东省博物馆). Free, timed real-name slot; see the museums guide. Wikivoyage (dated) names Zhujiang New Town station, Exit B1, on Lines 3 and 5.
    • Guangzhou Library and Opera House. Wikivoyage lists the library as free, 09:00–21:00 and closed Wednesdays (dated); check before going.
    • Sun Yat-sen’s Mansion Memorial Museum (孙中山大元帅府纪念馆). In Haizhu, free, Line 6 Tuanyida Square; Wikivoyage lists Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–16:30 (dated).
    • Haizhu National Wetland Park (海珠国家湿地公园). Wikivoyage lists ¥50, closed Mondays, nearest metro Datang on Line 3 (dated).

    What is in Panyu?

Panyu, south of the river, means Chimelong Safari Park (长隆野生动物世界). Official weekday adult tickets showed ¥300 on October 19, 2026, and the park is reached by Lines 3 or 7 to Hanxi Changlong. It needs a full day. Wikivoyage also lists Chimelong Paradise (long-running theme park) and Chimelong Water Park in the same district, with older prices, so check the Chimelong site.

How can you combine sights into a half day or a full day?

These routes keep you in one area, using the metro between stops. They are planning suggestions only.

Half day, old city, morning to lunch. Metro to Huangsha for Shamian Island, walk the island, then take Line 1 to Chen Clan Academy. Finish with lunch in Liwan; the dim sum guide explains morning tea.

Half day, river, afternoon to night. Canton Tower around late afternoon, then a river cruise after dark. See Guangzhou at night for what is open and the last metro.

Full day, history. Book the Nanyue palace zone for the morning, walk Beijing Road for lunch, then Yuexiu Park and the tomb zone or the Guangzhou Museum in the afternoon. All four are within a short ride on Lines 1 and 2.

Full day, family. Chimelong Safari Park open to close, with the hotel in Panyu or an early metro back. Do not add a second sight.

Full day, mixed. Shamian and Chen Clan in the morning, Beijing Road for lunch, Zhujiang New Town and the tower at dusk. Expect about 12 hours door to door.

For whole trips planned day by day, see the Guangzhou itinerary.

Which things to do are free or cheap?

Many old-city sights are free or ¥10. Shamian Island, Beijing Road, Yuexiu Park and the riverside promenades are free to walk. The Nanyue palace zone and the Guangdong Museum are free but need a booked slot. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is ¥10 on the city portal, and the Nanyue tomb zone is ¥10 (¥5 half price). The costs are the tower, the cruise, Chimelong and food. A cheap day is Shamian, Chen Clan, Beijing Road and a noodle lunch. Check the budget prices guide for what a day costs overall.

What are the practical tips before you set out?

    • Book museums first. The Guangdong Museum and the Nanyue palace zone use reservations on WeChat. Plan the day around the slot, not the other way round.
    • Check Mondays. The Nanyue King Museum is closed on Mondays (official page), and city lists give Monday closures for several other museums.
    • Carry your passport. Several sights ask for ID when you buy or book a ticket. The Chen Clan rule is from a dated Wikivoyage entry; Chimelong’s ID-card notice covers booked tickets.
    • Avoid peak days at Chimelong. Its official page shows higher prices on marked peak days (特定日).
    • Pay by app where you can. See the payment guide for foreign-card setup.
    • Beware touts on Beijing Road. A Reddit commenter wrote in May 2026 that they could not walk 5 m without being bothered by someone selling copy watches. Say no and walk on.

What can you do when it rains?

Museums are the best wet-weather plan. The Guangdong Museum and the Nanyue King Museum are large indoor options; book a morning slot. Malls in Tianhe give you dry hours, and the shopping guide lists them. April and May are the wettest spring months and June the wettest of the year, per the long-term climate normals in our when to visit guide. Dim sum is also a good indoor way to spend a wet morning.

What can you do in the evening?

The river at night is the standard answer: tower, cruise or a promenade walk. Beijing Road stays busy into the evening, and street food is reported to run later than shops. For bars, last metro times and getting home, read Guangzhou at night.

What and where should you eat?

Eating is a sight in itself. Start with the Guangzhou food guide for dishes and ordering, and the dim sum guide for teahouse rules. Muslim and vegetarian visitors should read the halal and vegetarian guide. For Michelin-listed places, see the Michelin Guangzhou list. For malls, Beijing Road and tax refunds, see shopping in Guangzhou.

How do you get between sights?

Use the metro. The Guangzhou metro guide explains foreign-card payment, and the Didi guide covers rides when you carry bags. Show a driver the Chinese name and address on each guide’s card.

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Packing too many sights into one day

Sights are spread across districts. Group them by area: old city (Liwan and Yuexiu), Zhujiang New Town and the river, and Panyu for Chimelong.

    • Showing up at a booked museum without a slot

The Guangdong Museum and the Nanyue palace zone use timed reservations. Book through the museum's ticket-reservation mini program before you travel.

    • Treating forum lists as official hours

Opening hours and prices in blogs are often old. Use the dated figures in each guide and confirm on the day.
