Guangzhou Layover: What to Do in 8, 12 or 24 Hours
Last checked October 19, 2026 against official sources. How we check
Quick answer
By our estimate, leave the airport only if you have at least 10 to 12 hours and a passport that allows entry. Under 8 hours, stay airside. Between 8 and 12 hours it is tight, and from about 12 hours a short city trip works. Baiyun Airport advises arriving three hours before an international flight, so plan that time first.
Key facts
| Minimum to leave the airport | About 10 to 12 hours between flights (our estimate) |
|---|---|
| Entry rule | 30-day visa-free entry or 240-hour transit, depending on your passport |
| Back at the airport | About 3 hours before an international departure (Baiyun Airport's advice; follow your airline) |
| Intercity train from T3 | East Ring line from Baiyun Airport East: about 30 to 55 min to Pazhou, 40 to 80 min to Panyu (12306, October 2026) |
| Arrival card | Needed if you enter China; exempt for direct transit within 24 hours inside the restricted area |

Is it worth leaving the airport?
It depends on the time between flights and on your passport. Baiyun Airport is far from the city centre, as a traveller on Reddit pointed out in January 2026. Getting in and out uses up hours before you see anything.
Our rule of thumb, which is an estimate and not an official figure:
| Layover | Our advice |
|---|---|
| Under 8 hours | Stay airside. Use the terminal. |
| 8 to 12 hours | Possible only with no checked bags and a short trip. Not recommended. |
| 12 to 24 hours | A half day in the city works if immigration is quick. |
| Over 24 hours | Book a hotel in the city and treat it as a short stay. |
Can you enter China on a layover?
Two rules matter. First, if you pass through immigration you enter China. Second, you need one of these:
- 30-day visa-free entry, if your passport is on the list. See our visa-free guide.
- 240-hour visa-free transit, if your passport is on the 240-hour list and you have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan count as onward destinations. See the 240-hour transit guide.
- A 24-hour temporary entry permit, if you transit within 24 hours on a through ticket. The NIA says you must get it from the airport’s border inspection before you leave the restricted area. China Southern’s transit page says the permit is typically granted to nationals of countries eligible for visa-free transit.
Check your passport in the visa-free checker before you book. For the arrival card, see our arrival card guide: passengers who transit directly within 24 hours without leaving the port’s restricted area do not need to fill it in, according to the NIA.
Work backwards from your departure
- Start with your next flight. Subtract about three hours for check-in, security and immigration on the way out. That is Baiyun Airport’s advice for international departures; also check your airline’s check-in deadline.
- Subtract the trip back to the airport. On the Guangzhou East Ring intercity line, the 12306 timetable for October 22, 2026 shows about 30 to 55 minutes between Baiyun Airport East (T3) and Pazhou, and 40 to 80 minutes to Panyu. Check 12306 for your date. A taxi or Didi can be slower in traffic; check live times in Amap or Didi.
- Subtract your arrival time: leaving the plane, immigration and a ride into town. We found no official timing for the queue.
- What is left is your time in the city.
If it is under two hours, stay at the airport.
Plans by time
8 hours
Stay airside, or ask about the free 5.5-hour transit tour that Baiyun Airport lists for international transit passengers with foreign passports (register at the International Services counter in the T2 international arrivals hall). It leaves the airport, so you still need a passport that can enter China.
12 hours
Pick one area, not a list. Canton Tower and the riverside are a common choice; check the route from your terminal in Amap. For food, ask your hotel or an app for a dim sum place near wherever you end up.
24 hours
You can stay a night. Choose a hotel near a station with a direct link to your terminal. T3 has no metro station, so for T3 a hotel near an East Ring intercity station is easier. China Southern publishes a free transit hotel scheme for some connections on its flights; ask the airline for the current rules. The airport to city guide lists metro, train, bus and taxi options. Remember to register your accommodation if you do not stay in a hotel.
With a full day out, one day in Guangzhou has an hour-by-hour plan; the Guangzhou itinerary covers longer stays.

Every passenger flight uses Terminal 2 or Terminal 3. A 24-hour shuttle bus for transfer passengers links the two in about 25 minutes, and the intercity train takes 6 to 9 minutes. Read the Baiyun terminals guide before you plan a same-day connection.
What we could not confirm
We could not verify immigration queue times, luggage storage rules, or whether China Southern’s transit hotel rules have changed since 2024. Ask your airline or the airport before you rely on any of them.
Traps and how to avoid them
- Planning a layover from Terminal 1
Terminal 1 closed to passengers on May 7, 2026. Check whether your flights use T2 or T3, and how you move between them, in our Baiyun terminals guide.
- Forgetting that leaving the airport is entering China
If you walk through immigration you enter China. You need visa-free entry, 240-hour transit, a visa or a 24-hour temporary entry permit, and an arrival card.
- Cutting the return too fine
Immigration, security and check-in all take time on the way out. Build your plan back from your departure time, not forward from your landing time.
- Assuming your bags are checked through
If you leave the airport you will probably have to collect your bags and check in again. Ask your airline at check-in whether they can stay checked through, and do not rely on forum answers.
FAQ
I have a 12-hour layover in Guangzhou. Can I leave the airport?
If your passport allows visa-free entry or 240-hour transit, yes. By our estimate 12 hours leaves a few hours in the city once you allow for immigration, the train each way and three hours back at the airport. Use the visa-free checker first.
Do I need a visa for a layover under 24 hours?
Not if you stay inside the airport's restricted area. If you leave, you enter China and need visa-free status, a visa, or a temporary entry permit, which the NIA says you must get from the airport's border inspection before leaving the restricted area.
Is there an airport hotel for transit passengers?
China Southern publishes a free transit hotel scheme for some Guangzhou connections on its flights, but the rules on its site are dated 2024 and depend on connection time and fare class. Its hotels are outside the restricted area, so you must be able to enter China. Baiyun Airport's website also lists airport hotels, such as the Yunxiang Hotel inside T3. Ask your airline for the current rules.
Which terminal will I arrive at?
Baiyun now has two passenger terminals, T2 and T3. Your ticket shows which one.
Where should I go with only a few hours?
Choose one area close to a metro or intercity station. Canton Tower and the old city are the usual first choices; read our Canton Tower guide for details.
