One Day in Guangzhou: An Hour-by-Hour Plan
Last checked October 22, 2026 against official sources. How we check
Quick answer
One day is enough for the old west and the river if you travel west to east. Eat morning tea in Liwan, see Shamian Island, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and Beijing Road, then finish at Canton Tower and a Pearl River cruise. This is a suggested plan, not a walked route, and many museums close on Mondays.
Key facts
| Price | Entry fees from ¥10 (Chen Clan); Canton Tower and the cruise are extra; food and metro extra (checked October 22, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Time needed | A full day, about 08:00 to 21:00 |
| Route | Liwan (west) to Yuexiu (centre) to Canton Tower (river) |
| Clock times | Suggestions only; check each stop's hours on the day |
| Monday | Several museums close; swap options below |
| Pay | Contactless foreign cards work at metro gates; set up Alipay or WeChat Pay for the rest |

Is one day in Guangzhou enough?
One day covers the old west (Liwan), the old centre (Yuexiu) and the river at night. It does not cover Baiyun Mountain, Chimelong Safari Park or a day trip. If you have more time, the Guangzhou itinerary hub compares plans from one to seven days.
If you are in transit, read the layover guide first. It covers how many hours you need before leaving the airport. For the checklist after landing, see your first 24 hours.
This is a suggested plan built from published sources. Nobody has walked it with a stopwatch, so the clock times are suggestions and the plan gives no ride times between stops. Use the 广州地铁 (Guangzhou Metro) app or a map app for those.
The day at a glance
| About | Stop | Metro | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 08:00 | Morning tea in Liwan | Near Line 1 (see the dim sum guide) | Reported ¥10–20 tea, ¥15–45 a plate |
| 09:30 | Shamian Island | Huangsha 黄沙站 (Lines 1 and 6) (reported) | free (reported) |
| 11:30 | Chen Clan Ancestral Hall | Chen Clan Academy 陈家祠站 (Lines 1 and 8) (reported) | ¥10 |
| 13:00 | Lunch near Beijing Road | Line 1 | Reported ¥15–25 for a food-court meal |
| 14:30 | Beijing Road, then Yuexiu Park or the Nanyue King Museum | Gongyuanqian 公园前站 (Lines 1 and 2) | Free (Yuexiu Park reported; Nanyue palace zone free with a reservation) |
| 17:30 | Canton Tower | Canton Tower 广州塔站 (Line 3 and APM line) | Not on the official pages |
| 19:30 | Pearl River night cruise | Canton Tower 广州塔站 (Line 3 and APM line) | ¥88–398 (reported) |
08:00: Where to have morning tea in Liwan
Start with 早茶 (zǎochá, morning tea), the Cantonese dim sum breakfast. The dim sum guide explains trolley, tick-sheet and QR ordering and the tea charge. It names 陶陶居 (Tao Tao Ju) at 广州市荔湾区第十甫路20号 as one old Liwan teahouse and says its opening hours could not be confirmed, so check before you go.
Pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay if the restaurant uses a QR menu. The Alipay and WeChat Pay guide shows the set-up. Aim to finish by 09:30; morning tea can run long.

Take the metro to Huangsha (reported), which sits on Lines 1 and 6, and follow the 沙面 signs. Sources disagree on the exit letter, so the Shamian guide gives no single exit. Walking the island is free, and most colonial-era buildings are not open inside. Allow one to two hours for the streets, the chapel and the river path.
Photo: JULIANISME · CC BY-SA 4.0 Details11:30: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠) is on Line 1, the same line as Huangsha, so you need no change. The hall’s station is Chen Clan Academy (reported). Its hours are 09:00–17:30 (reported) and the ticket is ¥10. The city’s English portal and a 2020 city list give slightly different start times, and sources disagree on the closing day. Check the museum’s notice for your date. If it is closed, skip to lunch; you lose one stop, not the day.
Wikivoyage says foreigners show a passport to buy a ticket, so carry it. The Chen Clan guide explains what to look at. Allow about 1.5 hours.
13:00: Lunch near Beijing Road
Ride Line 1 to Gongyuanqian. The Beijing Road guide names Huifu East Road (惠福东路) as the food street nearby. For a cheap lunch, the budget guide reports roughly ¥15 to ¥25 for a food-court bowl, from one 2024 menu, so expect more in tourist areas. The street food guide lists wonton noodles, claypot rice and rice rolls if you want a local dish.
14:30: Beijing Road, then one museum or park
Beijing Road Pedestrian Street (北京路步行街) is at Gongyuanqian (Lines 1 and 2). Walking it is free. Look for the glass panels that show layers of an ancient road, and ignore touts selling copy watches and bags. The Beijing Road guide has the detail.
Photo: 古海岸遗址 · CC BY-SA 4.0 DetailsThen pick one:
- Option A: Yuexiu Park. A free hillside park with the Five Rams statue and Zhenhai Tower. The Yuexiu Park guide gives the station, the gates and the hours. It reports that the Guangzhou Museum inside Zhenhai Tower closes on Mondays (2020 city list), so check on the day.
- Option B: Nanyue King Museum, palace zone. It uses the same station as Beijing Road, Gongyuanqian 公园前站 (Lines 1 and 2), Exit F. Hours are Tue–Sun 09:00–17:30, last entry 17:00, and it is closed on Mondays. Entry is free but you must reserve on the WeChat account 南越王博物院. The museums guide explains the booking, and the lower tomb chamber needs its own reservation a day ahead.
17:30: Canton Tower
From Gongyuanqian ride Line 1 to Tiyu Xilu and change to Line 3. Our where to stay guide lists Tiyu Xilu as the Line 1 and Line 3 interchange (a Wikipedia-sourced detail); we found no official metro page for this change, so check the in-station map. The tower’s station is Canton Tower 广州塔站 (Line 3 and APM line). The official site shows hours of 09:30–22:30. Its pages publish no ticket price, so the Canton Tower guide lists what resellers charge and which hall or platform to choose.
A clear late afternoon lets you see the city in daylight and stay for the lights. Check a forecast app before you pay. On a hazy day, spend less time at the top and more on the river.
19:30: Pearl River night cruise
The tower’s cruise pier, the Fortune Pier (广州塔财富码头), is on the river bank north-east of the tower. The cruise guide says tickets are sold in the 广州塔珠江游 WeChat mini-program and at the first-floor desk, and that a cruise is about 60 minutes on the water. Prices are ¥88–398 (reported), depending on boat, deck and buffet. Departure times differ by pier, so confirm the last departure for the day when you buy.
How do you get back after the cruise?
This guide prints no last-train times because they differ by line and direction. Check your station in the Guangzhou Metro line query or the 广州地铁 app before you go up the tower. If the metro has stopped, see the Didi guide or the taxi guide. The metro guide explains tapping a foreign card at the gates.
What if it rains?
Swap the outdoor stops (Shamian, Beijing Road, Yuexiu Park) for indoor ones:
- Guangdong Museum in Zhujiang New Town: free, with a timed, real-name reservation. Station: Opera House (reported) on the APM line (reported; check the in-station map for exits). Hours: Entry from 09:00, last entry 16:00, closes 17:00.
- Nanyue King Museum (above), reserved on WeChat.
- Cantonese Opera Art Museum at 恩宁路127号, beside Yongqingfang: 09:00–21:00, last entry 20:30, closed Mondays, entry free. See the opera guide.
- Tianhe Road malls, for lunch and shopping: see the shopping guide.
Keep morning tea, Canton Tower and the cruise. The tower’s outdoor platforms may close in bad weather, according to the Canton Tower guide, so ask before you buy a platform ticket.
What if it is a Monday?
The Nanyue King Museum is closed on Mondays. The Guangdong Museum is closed on Mondays (reported), and the Guangzhou Museum in Zhenhai Tower is reported closed on Mondays, per a 2020 city list. Drop those and keep Shamian, Beijing Road, Yuexiu Park’s grounds, Canton Tower and the cruise. For Chen Clan, check the notice, because sources disagree on its closing day.
What if I have a free evening at the Canton Fair?
Go straight to the river. From Pazhou, ride Line 8 to Kecun and change to Line 3 for Canton Tower, as the Canton Fair metro guide describes. Then take the cruise. The Canton Fair first-timer guide covers the fair itself.
Can I make it a food day?
Keep morning tea and swap the afternoon: lunch from the street food guide and a late supper from the night markets and late-night food guide instead of the cruise.
What does the day cost?
Checked October 22, 2026. “Reported” means a third-party figure, not an official price.

| Beijing Road | free (reported) | Pedestrian street |

| Nanyue King Museum, palace zone | free | Official, reservation needed |

Traps and how to avoid them
- Planning a museum on a Monday
The Nanyue King Museum is closed on Mondays, and other museums are reported closed that day. Use the Monday swap below.
- Trusting one closing day for Chen Clan
Sources disagree on whether Chen Clan Ancestral Hall has a closing day: Wikivoyage lists daily opening, a July 2024 report says Tuesdays, and a 2020 city list gives none. Check its notice for your date before you plan around it.
- Arriving at the Nanyue museum without a reservation
The palace zone is free but needs a reservation on the WeChat account 南越王博物院. Book before the day.
- Adding a seventh stop
The plan already crosses the city once. Drop a stop rather than rush the cruise.
FAQ
Is one day in Guangzhou enough?
It is enough for a first look at the old town and the river. It is not enough for Baiyun Mountain, Chimelong Safari Park or a day trip, which each take most of a day.
Can I see the old town and Canton Tower on the same day?
Yes. This plan keeps the old west and the old centre for the day and leaves the river for the evening, so the long metro change happens once.
I am on a layover. Does this plan work?
Only if your layover is long enough to clear immigration and return with time to spare. Read the layover guide first, because it covers the time you need at the airport.
What if I only have an evening free during the Canton Fair?
Skip the morning stops and go straight to Canton Tower and the cruise. The fair section below gives the metro route from Pazhou.
Do foreign bank cards work on the metro?
Contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards issued outside mainland China work at the gates, according to a Guangzhou Daily report on the city portal. See the metro guide for the steps.
