    Do you need a visa?

Visa-free entry for 30 days covers business, tourism, visiting family or friends, exchange visits or transit, so a short business trip, meeting or fair visit is allowed for passports on the list. 50 countries are on the one-sided list and 28 more have mutual agreements. It does not cover work, study or journalism.

    Arriving at Baiyun Airport

Baiyun International Airport now uses Terminals 2 and 3; Terminal 1 closed to passengers on May 7, 2026. For the 139th Canton Fair, the airport reported one-stop service centres in the international arrival areas of Terminals 2 and 3, open 24 hours, covering SIM cards, transport booking and exhibition support, with fixed-price transfers to the fair complex. See Baiyun Airport terminals and Baiyun Airport to the city.

    Getting around the city

    Where to stay

For the Canton Fair, Pazhou and Xingangdong on Line 8 are the closest areas, and prices rise sharply in fair weeks according to traveller reports. See where to stay for the Canton Fair. For meetings in the city, Zhujiang New Town in Tianhe has business hotels; the Newsgd hotel list for the 138th Canton Fair names two there. Hotels register foreign guests; see accommodation registration.

    Paying and staying connected

Mobile payment is the default in China. Set up before you travel, and carry a second option. For cards and apps, see the guides in the money and internet section. The airport service centres sell SIM cards and help install apps for messaging, payments and translation, according to Newsgd.

    Language and meetings

A traveller on Reddit asked in April 2026 whether talking to suppliers in English is easy or whether translate apps are used. We found no official data on English use in business, so carry a translation app and a card with your hotel’s Chinese address. The Chinese phrases tool and Show your driver help with taxis and hotels.

    What to wear

We found no authoritative dress guidance. Weather data from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals show Guangzhou’s average high at about 26.4°C in April, with 11 rainy days, and 29.3°C in October. Pack light business clothing, comfortable shoes if you will visit the fair, and an umbrella.

If your trip includes the Canton Fair

Traps and how to avoid them

    • Doing paid work on a visa-free entry

Visa-free entry covers business, tourism, visiting family or friends, exchange visits or transit. It does not cover work, study or journalism. If your trip includes paid work for a Chinese employer, you need a different visa.

    • Booking past the end of the visa-free list

The one-sided list ends on December 31, 2026 for 48 of 50 countries. Check the checker again before booking trips for 2027.

    • Landing without a payment app or data

Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and a SIM or eSIM before you leave, or use the airport service centres.

    • Planning all-day meetings across districts

Guangzhou's business areas are far apart. Check the metro route between meetings before you commit.

    FAQ

Can I travel to China on business without a visa?

Yes, if your passport is on the visa-free list. It covers business, tourism, visiting family or friends, exchange visits or transit for up to 30 days. Use the visa-free checker.

What if I need an M visa?

An embassy page lists M as the visa for commercial and trade activities, with an invitation letter from a real Chinese organisation or a Canton Fair letter. See our guide.

Is it easy to talk to people in English or do you need translate apps?

A traveller on Reddit asked this in April 2026. Do not assume English is spoken everywhere. Carry a translation app and Chinese address cards.

What should I wear on a business trip to Guangzhou?

We found no official dress guidance. Weather data shows October averages 29.3°C high and April 26.4°C, so pack light business clothes and an umbrella for April.

How far is Guangzhou from Shenzhen?

High-speed trains link the two cities. See our Guangzhou to Shenzhen train guide for times.
